Damn it, I'm getting ready to go to Colorado for a month, and wanted to pick up a couple of sets of strings just in case. Well instead of going to my local GC, I decided I would go out to Bizarre Guitar (Phoenix, AZ). Big mistake...So I'm walking around saying hello to the guys and was poking around the Fender section, so I say to Mike (the Manager), "hey are these new Strats as good as they say?" Mike says no, they are better. Hmmm, now my curiosity is peaked. So I said, how about letting me check one out. So naturally he pulls the color combination I have been thinking about and says here you go.

Damn this thing plays wonderfully and sounds awesome!!! OK OK, all I want is a set of strings. So Mike says, oh yea, this one came in last night, and except for the set up, no one else has touched her. And he'll knock some off of their sticker price (which is already $300 less than GC or MF).

I kept telling myself, all you want are strings, all you want are strings. F*ck it, I gave in to the forces and took her home.

So I'm standing at the counter and I told Mike the real reason I came in today, and he just snickered and tossed a couple of strings in the case. Now you won't feel so bad, you actually did get what you came for!!!.

Yep, I got my strings for under $1,000 and got a free guitar to boot. I'm pretty slick huh?

So enough of this, let me introduce you to Blondie. She is a 2008 American Stratocaster.

A classic looking strat there!

I guess you learned the dangers of string shopping, next time you'll be more careful.

I once waked into a Guitar Center "just to window" shop, and ended up with a guitar.

Thanks guys. This is my first Fender, and am really enjoying her.
I've been asked about the aging on these. I was told the body should yellow a bit and the neck should get darker. Is this a true statement from your experiences?

yeah it sounds about right, i had the same colour on a less expensive guitar and it yellowed after about 7 years. I think it was down to the fact that the laquer ended up as 60% nicotine.

Very expensive strings but the free guitar was nice. I may use that blag on the missus next time i get bitten by the buying fever.

A few years ago I walked into Guitar Center to check out the EJ strat. Plugged it into a Cyber Twin and played it for a while. Fell in love and ended up walking out of there with the EJ AND the Cyber Twin. They just sounded so good together.

It was a great G.A.S. moment.

Once I went in for strings and came out with the strings and a Ebow. I bet there's a lot of us here who have gone for strings and spent a few hundred more in a sudden G.A.S. attack.

I would think the aging process will take longer nowadays. Over here in the UK the air in bars is so much cleaner now there is a Smoking ban in public places. I would think cigarette smoke in clubs whilst gigging had a lot to do with the darkening of the necks and headstocks on strats- of course I may be wrong.

cheers

That's a good G.A.S. story!

I can relate to that. Bizarre Guitar can be a dangerous place for one's checkbook and debit card.

I walked into Bizarre in June to buy a case for a Gretsch Electromatic Pro Jet and saw a Classic Series 50's Strat in Surf Green that said "buy me!" I did. :D
