Though it had been reported in Guitar Player magazine (30+ yrs ago) that most of Are You Experienced was recorded on a Stratocaster, except for Red House which was played on an old Hofner (whose pickups were said to be scotch taped on), the Shapiro & Glebbeek "Electric Gypsy" book (the Hendrix "bible") says that Red House was recorded on a Strat. So the most reliable source has it that Jimi played a Strat on the whole first album.

I can't figure out where that Telecaster myth first came from. There are quotes where Jimi expresses his dislike for Teles!

I'm sure Jim had tried a Telecaster some time in his life. I mean . . . come on . . . what do you expect? Just because you never seen him in film footage or actually playing one, I'm very sure he must have test drove one. I can say this much he also liked a Gibson SG Custom 3 pickup that he played on the Dick Cavett Show and he also liked Gibson Flying V's as well as the Strat, but the Strat is the most known to him for use all the rest of his life.

I'd heard the Telecaster/Hey Joe story a couple of years ago and it was a big shock to me. I first started playing in 1968. My brother brought home the Are You Experienced? album at that time and I became an instant fan. He was my first guitar hero. The solo in Hey Joe was like a religious experience for me and I was dissappointed trying to get that sound on my Tele. I reasoned that you had to have a stratocaster to get it, so that is where my strat lust originated. It would be another dozen years before I had one though. Oh the irony. I might have had "right" guitar all along.
