Look what i found:

" And before you go buying that left-handed neck and vibrato bridge to add on to your right-handed Strat to “get the Hendrix sound,” consider this: Hendrix borrowed bassist Noel Redding’s Telecaster to record both “Hey Joe” and “Purple Haze”—a sobering revelation for anyone who ever quoted those tracks as classic examples of Jimi’s great Stratocaster tone."-

I for one wouldnt take strat sound advice from the gibson site

notice the line in there that no 60's strats post or pre cbs were not very good.

coming from a company that hasnt made a decent guitar in the last 12 years thats a mighty statement.

[EDIT omitted the word not on 2nd line]

The writer didn't say that directly. It was quoted from ROGER MAYER. This article had very little to do with gibson. The writer himelf did not bad on anything.

Wow that still surprises me... purple haze on a tele.

anyone remember the strat he used for awhile with a tele neck on it, would make sense if he liked the neck but struggled with upper fret access.

It doesnt suprise me at all that purple haze was on a tele. Listen beneath the octave up on the fuzz pedal, its a classic biting tele bridge tone especialy the octaved Bb's on the intro.

Urban Myth.

While I don't have every book on Hendrix ever written, none have ever mentioned this. Most importantly, the book Noel Redding wrote didn't mention it. He does mention the Telecaster twice. The first mention was how in 1965 he got it to replace a Gibson whose neck broke off in his hand during a Who number.

The second mention is this:
Quote:
The matter of a bass rumbled on. In January (1967) I borrowed a Fender Mustang for a few gigs ... I'd already fallen in love with the Fender Jazz Bass ... On 7 February I found my bass in Sound City. When you find a guitar that's 'yours', you know it. If you're worried, it's the wrong one. The right one will have that 'at home' feeling. However, it's always the one you can't afford. I'd previously swopped my Telecaster with Trevor Williams for a Gibson two-pick-up. So I used the Gibson as part payment on 'my bass', which was costing well over £200.

So it seems to me that he didn't even own the Telecaster when "Purple Haze" recorded.

The Hendrix Sessions book says that John Mayall and Peter Green were at the Purple Haze recording session. Perhaps they would remember what guitar Jimi was playing.

I also read that same article about Redding loaning Hendrix a Telecaster to play Purple Haze & Hey Joe. I do know one thing when he first started off he used a Sears Silvertone and he also owned a few Rickenbackers too. In the mid sixties he was mostly using Fender Twin Reverbs and Vox amps. You can see him with his ear up to the Twin Reverb tuning up his guitar on the Cry Of Love Album. After that he was using Sunn's and finally Marshalls. It was said on some of the Electric Ladyland sessions he also used a Sound City.

I found a very interesting website what tells you all of his very early guitars and amps. I'll write them all in order:
- Supro Ozark 1560S
- Silvertone Danelektro (which he nicknamed "Betty Jean".)
- Epiphone Wilshire
- Fender Duo Sonic
- Fender Jazzmaster
- Then with funds from his girlfriend and the trade in from his Duo Sonic, he ovbiously got the Strat.
His strings were Fender Rock'N'Roll .10's, but he supposedly used a very heavy bass E string.
The amps he used were obviously Marshalls, but from '65 through '66, Hendrix's mainstay was a Fender Twin Reverb and rarely Vox amps. He also used Sunn amps.

hendrix used plexi's and sound city amps for are you experienced.
a bassman and a P90 equipped V for axis, and twins, plexis and a bassman for ladyland. You cant hear any class A amps on any of his recordings. The only sound that comes near to it is Drifting but thats still way too jagged for a distorted ac30. Also the only reason he used marshall's live the majority of the time was because of their reliability. Above musicianship Hendrix was a showman, to the point of storming off, if he couldnt play decently. considering this and the fact that a typical 60's ac30 in anything less than tip top condition, blows up after any kind of prolonged use. I doubt he would of used em. I certainly dont know of or can recognise its tone on any recording.

It's always interesting to learn some new tidbit of music history especially about someone who has had so many books, documentaries, etc done on his life. Any hear about the new cd that is going to be release that was found? Jimi Hendrix and Steven Stills from Crosby, Stills, & Nash? I'll have to locate that site again but I believe I saw it at http://www.ultimateguitartabs.com
