The Wikipedia article on David Gilmour mentions a doubleneck strat being played by David around 1972.

In searching, I found more references to a black doubleneck strat (both 6 strings, but one set up for slide use) and even dead links to a picture, but I could not hunt down the picture. Does anyone know where to find a picture of this guitar?

Supposedly, this doubleneck is mentioned in the recent book on the history of "The Black Strat." Can someone post what the book says about the doubleneck? Thanks loads.

Seems like I read that somewhere before too. will have to wait until I get the book to find out. Are the books already out? I was told by my dealer that the guitars are supposed to be in the shop on the 22nd,Sept. They must be shipping a few days earlier.

This is the best pic I have found:

I should say, it's the only pic I've found thus far. It looks like a doubleneck.

Custom double-neck Stratocaster
This was a guitar David made from spare parts as a project to be able to play both normal guitar and slide on the same instrument. The lower neck had higher action on the strings for slides. The guitar was used during the spring US tour in 1972 but later abandoned

I thought that "The Black Strat" book was out, but Amazon tells me that it doesn't get released until Sept 15th. Oops.

I can wait a couple weeks to hear what is said about the Doubleneck in the book. But perhaps some of the Rabid Pink Floyd fans can find a better picture of Gilmour playing it. I likes me the doubleneck strat!

In a week's time I will be arriving in a part of the country where my late brother's vast collection of Floyd books etc is housed. So long as I remember I shall be searching through that library for any picture or other information that can help you, if only for my own arcane curiosity.

You are welcome to jog my memory by bumping this thread again next Friday, if you feel like it!

Okay.

Thanks.

Just think: David Gilmour also owned a Doubleneck Strat!

Might be better looking at the VG Stratocaster since it came out and just switch tunings with the single knob on the fly since this guitar has come out and wasn't available at that time.

I'm not in the market for a VG.
I'm not thinking about buying a doubleneck either, because I already own one (I do use the non-trem neck for alternate tunings, by the way)!!!

[Small hours of Saturday morning]

Well, Orvilleowner; I have now looked carefully through almost 20 books about Pink Floyd, most of them heavy on pictures. I have also examined a sheaf of concert programs and other materials. And just to do the job thoroughly I have also scrutinised two books on Syd Barrett and a large hard cover book about Nick Mason's racing car exploits. In all of the above that possess indices I have hunted for mention of doubleneck Strats, though I must admit I have not read the texts of all these books, so unindexed mention may exist: I can't exclude that possibility.

However, I can tell you that I found no sign of pictures of a doubleneck Strat. Of course, I can't say that that means there are none to be found, but it does seem highly likely they are not thick on the ground. I'm afriad it looks like Phil Taylor's new book is now your best chance.

On the plus side, I am now ready to write a small treatise on Dave Gilmour's changing hair and beard through the ages. But that doesn't help. Sorry - I tried.

:( - C

Thanks for looking. I would like to read about Dave's hair styles over the years! The current lack of hair look isn't so becoming.

Thanks for the info, bluestube. I'll check gilmourish when it's back up.

I'm kind of surprised, though. Don't any of the Gilmour fans here have the first edition of the book?
Wouldn't this topic called "David Gilmour Doubleneck Strat" catch their attention?
