Hello, I'v actually changed my mind from a custom shop to a 1962 vintage hot rod, but I found the neck a bit chunky. I have biggish hands but I like thin(ish) necks. I went out today and had a go on one and can't really remember what the necks feel like. Is the neck really a big difference to a normal C-Shape neck?

Hello JimmyGuitarist,

The '62 hot rod neck is definitly
chunkier than the modern C-neck.
With a 9.5 fingerboard radius.
I like it, for me it's excellent.

Bear in mind that the
'62 vintage reissue has
the modern c-neck.
With a 7.25 fingerboard radius

Many times these two
guitars are often confused
by sellers and buyers.

Hope this helps.

Cheers.

Thanks for the reply. How do the small frets and tight 7.25 radius feel on the American Vintage for string bending? because I use heavy gauge strings.

I love the neck on my 62 Hot Rod. Definitely chunky, a lot like my late 80's SG. If you were to play the standard C neck back-to-back with it, you'd immediately notice the difference. I find the extra beefy neck to be much less fatiguing.

My 80's Kramer, OTOH, has a super thin shredder neck. It plays wonderfully, but I find that my hand and wrist get a bit more fatigued.

I've got large, but not huge, hands - I can palm a basketball, if that gives you any idea.

I actually have a large hand, but I use my thumb alot. Would it be okay for that?

Few things could be more personal about a guitar than the feel of the neck, and for sure you can only decide by trying the options against one another in a shop. On the face of it, you'd have thought that the 62 Vintage Reissue with its C-shape neck that Mr Bill mentioned would be the one for you.

'Cept, I have smallish hands (I certainly cannot grasp a basketball one-handed!) and I've long felt the modern C-shape was built for me. Till I started reading certain people on this Forum talking about their love of V necks with such enthusiasm I just thought I'd update my own feelings about that. So I've been auditioning V necks when I get the chance in shops and finding I quite like them now.

What happened - did my hands change shape; has ZZDoc, amongst others, talked my hands into feeling different? That V always appeared to conflict with a certain bone in my thumb - but I just can't seem to get that to happen now. Bizarre...

So keep your mind open and go and try a few out. Only feel will tell...

Cheers - C

I should be going to try them both out this Friday, (thats if they have 'em both on display). I'd definetly go for the American Vintage but I'v seen some other posts about the 7.25 radius and I do like to bend strings and with .11's, I struggle on a 9.5.

Hi again: which shop do you go to? Do I remember right, was it you who doesn't like Coda Music? Be interested to hear how you get along.

Cheers - C

I don't have any problem using my thumb...actually, I think it's more comfortable.
