Will a guitar sound better if the pickup is screwed directly into the body rather than being attached to a pickguard or plate? Does it have a better tone? Just curious.

define better.

Screwed into the body gives a sightly darker tone, with more sustain. ALthough if it screwed into the pickguard, it's easily removable.

The reason I asked was because I heard that andy summers guitar has a pickup that is screwed directly into the wood, so I was wondering how that may affect the tone.

I think the answer would be that it will sound different. I agree with Hendrix's explanation.

Carefull what you ask here, I asked a similar question a few weeks ago and ended up convincing several people to disassemble thier guitars...

the result will be more low end...
I just saw an interview with Joe Satriani at GC on youtube.
He mentioned that his pickups are not screwed into the wood of the body.
He said he does not like them screwed in.
My guess is to avoid the extra low end that the wood may transfer to the pickup.
Lows can be nice on guitars, but in the realms of high gain, fuzz, & distortion it can also be very muddy.
On the downside the pickups can actually vibrate when on stage at those super loud, big system volumes.

Satriani also has a high pass filter that cuts the lows
when his volume knob is popped up on his signiture guitars.
Fender has a similar but different effect on their Greasebucket™ Tone Circuit.
(Rolls Off Highs without Adding Bass)

You will also notice him talking about how the latest pickups he has been using
are actually adding to the lows a tiny tiny bit.
That is related to his new distortion pedal that is better about handling low end now at high gain levels.
In the past, he was using other pedals that weren't dialed in this way.

Hello Blaqdog,

The GE Smith telecaster
has the bridge pickup
mounted to the body.

GE Smith likes it.

Cheers.

G.E. Smith would say yes. His signature Telecaster is designed that way:

My Stagemaster doesn't have a pickguard and the pups are screwed right into the body. Seems to give it a warmer tone than my Strat.

On vintage-styled Telecasters, the neck pickup is screwed into the body. On others, the neck pickup is attached to the pickguard like strat pickups (look for the 2 screws at the pickup's ends).

So that's my only experience with pickups attached directly to the body.

I can't say that I can notice any sonic differences.
