Check this out...i'm looking to buy this '68 MIJ(or is it CIJ?) strat reissue. I was wondering if this information sent to me from the seller is accurate:
Hey Dan,

Here are the photos you requested. I should explain the serial # to you:

Fender mandates that all factory 2ND and “blemished” guitars have the last few digits of the serial # removed from the guitar. This, along with the USED stamp on the back of the headstock, is simply the manufacturer’s way of preventing crooked dealers from returning the guitar to the factory under a full warranty. They also mandate that a replacement serial # be assigned to the guitar over the original factory serial #. This is the white sticker (3114…) you see in one of the pictures.

I hope that helps – let me know if you have any further questions about the guitar.

Thanks!

If any of you could tell me if this is indeed the fender factory mandate regarding these 'blem' or used guitars, i'd greatly appreciate it. D.

I have heard of some place selling guitars (Fenders, Gibsons, and maybe others) with USED stamped into the back of the headstock, but I don't remember the whole story.

I believe that Fender will tell you that they don't sell Seconds or Blemished guitars (unlike Gibson & Epiphone, etc). These Fender guitars marked USED with obscured serial numbers may be so-called "Grey Market" items that aren't meant for sale in the US. Calling them used is their way around the restrictions.

This sounds like one of those guitars. I will have to do some hunting to find that "USED guitar" website/company again.

Watch this space. Some info from one seller:

A 1968 Japanese Fender manufactured during the CBS era? I don't think so. There was no Fender Japan in the '60s. It was formed in 1982 and it made mostly Squiers in its early years.

Jedi was talking about a Reissue model -- with 1968 styling.
Not a MIJ from 1968.

OK, that makes more sense.
