Now we have to take care, because many of these people can afford much shinier libel lawyers than we can. But to say the very least, some of the decisions of the Hendrix estate are curious. I haven't the slightest doubt that Niki is right regarding the blocking of movies of Jimi's life story.

And things get very complicated behind the scenes when guardians of estates regard themselves as Keepers of the Flame. My wife is an author's agent in the publishing world, and was approached to become the representative of a very famous writer's estate. Actually, the estate came to her via a movie producer who wanted to film one of the novels and was having a hard time dealing with the estate.

Turned out the guy in charge had very specific ideas about how a movie ought to be made. My wife asked who he saw directing such a film. David Lean, was his idea. Lean of course is sadly deceased - who else? Merchant-Ivory. Same problem: could the gentleman think of anyone who is actually still in the world of the living? Er - no.

My wife declined that prestigious appointment on the basis it would make a misery of the rest of her life.

And a delicious example of where it all goes wrong for an estate. I saw a list of who had made what out of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, just prior to the release of the third movie. So far at that point the director, Peter Jackson, had made £65 million. The production company had made huge amounts. This and that actor had taken million pound bonuses on top of salary. The first two movies had netted over a billion pounds - $2 billion.

And the Tolkien estate had made... something over £100,000. Oops. A case if ever there was one of a lawyer acting for an estate who thought he understood the fiendish complexity of movie contracts and didn't. That's the sort of story that makes the hair on the heads of the likes of the Hendrix estate stand on end like a 70s perm. Maybe we'd all be wary in their position...

Cheers - C

The charity that manages the estate of British writer J.R.R. Tolkien has sued the studio behind the Lord of the Rings film trilogy, saying it hasn't been paid a cent for granting the rights to the story.

The Tolkien Trust and publisher HarperCollins filed suit against New Line Cinema in a Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday.

The suit is claiming $150 million US in damages and threatens to revoke New Line's right to make The Hobbit, another Tolkien tale, into a film.

The suit claims New Line has not paid any part of the 7.5 per cent of gross receipts from the films it promised in return for rights to film the story.

News to me - how fascinating! Thanks.

The one thing that is sure from this point on is that enormously well paid lawyers on both sides are going to pocket jaw-dropping sums of money. Still, someone on the estate's side has bungled royally for it ever to get to this point. Small-time family lawyers confusing words such as gross and net are notorious causes of problems in this area.

The world of film contracts is horrifyingly complicated. My wife has run her own company for two decades: she does all her own publishing contracts - but she calls in extremely heavyweight media lawyers to deal with film rights. That area is just too incomprehensible and brutal to mess with...

Let's see how the story develops...

Cheers - C

For me, I'd just as soon as put this one to bed. There are better things under the sun.

The legend lives on. Fortunately the good was not interred with the bones.

Well THAT took long enough! Maybe one of these days they'll latch on to the bright idea of rotating the photo so we can see the back of the guitar as well.

(Please save the wise cracks for the 'other' Fender forum!) :P

Why does that rosewood fretboard look so dark?
It looks like my ebony fretboard.

Hey Strat Heads-

Here is the problem I see with the "Artist Series" Line of Fender Guitars-

It is my opinion that an Artist or Signature series guitar should be an instrument that exemplifies great craftsmanship and pays tribute to the artist it is made in honor of. I am sure that KWS has done a lot for Fender and he is a good player, same with Coragan and John Mayer- But they are not legendary (In My Opinion)- Hendrix, SRV, Clapton, Buddy Guy, Gilmore, Beck, Yungwe (sp) Dick Dale, Trower, EJ....These are Legends who have helped to shape Rock and Roll while at the same time expand the capabilities of the Fender Strat. John Mayer has a Pretty cool Pop song and banged a lot of starlets

The Artist Series, in my opinion, should not be cheapened by issuing one out like it's a trading card of the stars.

I understand the marketing gimmick and the need for Fender to find ways to push product. God knows I don't want them to be forced to raise prices-

Thanks-

The Freeze

I'm not sure how Signature Series come about.

Now that's question for Brad!!

Doc

Doc, how come I can't find anything about this guitar on the Fender site? I would like to read the specs. i.e. pups, neck, body, electronics etc. Am I missing something as I don't know much about KWS guitar. He is a great player from my neck of the woods. That's a shame on me. :?

Look under Signature Series! It's on there. That Black one without the competition stripe looks exaclty like David Gilmour's Black Strat with the all Black body, pickguard with White pickup cover and knobs like I said except for the competition stripe.

Anybody figure out where this model is made yet? It lists at about $1k and retails at about $700. At that price point, I'm hoping it's American.

I have a feeling that it's made in Mexico because it comes with a gig bag and most all of the American guitars come with the hardshell case. That's what I think.
