Definitely. Some things just sound better with that bit of twang in it. I like all of the positions, but usually use the middle or the neck.

Hmmm. And here I'd been wondering if anybody ever used the neck pickup much...

As a beginner, (as in, I'm a beginner), one of the first things my teacher told me was the bridge was more for lead, the neck more for rhythm. I notice I tend to end up on the bridge for most stuff, maybe the bridge/mid if I'm using a lot of distortion. I'll have to try those other settings and see, I guess.

I think that's a little too generalized with the ancient "Lead" and "Rhythm" positions on Les Pauls. I've had a number of songs where I'll play rhythm on the bridge pickup for some biting rock, and use the neck pick for a howling bluesy solo to that biting rock, so there is no set rule for that.

Strats are very versatile, and can get tons of tones. Take them for what they are, and use them in any way possible. Once you start thinking "bridge = lead" etc, you'll seriously put restraints on your creative mind and your playing will suffer for it. Try everything and never stop experimenting...

That's good advice, Thanks! Actually, what I was really trying to say is that as a beginner, I have no clue as to whether I'm playing something that would be "lead" or "rhythm"; I just noticed that I tend to gravitate to using the bridge out of personal preference. Which also explains why I don't see myself ever getting an HSS strat.

My bridge pickup isn't connected to the tone control, so I think it sounds a little harsh by itself. I do like it clean in combination with the middle pickup, though.

I love it for surf music, otherwise, I never use it on my Strats. I think I own only one Fender (Cyclone) with a humbucker in the bridge and it doesn't get played much.

I have an HSS Highway One Strat, so it has a humbucker in the bridge pickup positon. I usually always leave my guitar in the bridge pickup position except when I'm playing some of Boston's Songs (One of my all time favorite bands). They use alot of Acoustic Guitars as well as electrics though.
