There have been quite a few questions about blocking and upblocking tremolos lately. Here's mine:

I read in an interview with Clapton (can't find it now) that he likes to block off his tremolo by tightening up the claw all the way an putting on all 5 springs. However, it sounds like his signature models are blocked off with a piece of wood. Does anyone know why a different method was used for the signature model?

I have no idea what the answer to your question. But I have had a clapton strat for 6 years now and have left the wood block in place always. Everything works fine and I don't think it would be a big deal done like this or by tightening the claw screws.

Now I heard or read that Clapton actually had a block of wood in "BLACKIE"

According to Fender's description of the Clapton Strat, it came blocked with wood because Clapton insisted on it.

If you block it with different types of wood, does the sound change? Ash-Alder-Maple-Metal Screws?

Great idea for a research project! Do it!!! Must be done on the same guitar, all other variables held constant including the dimensions of the block which you will have to get from a current Clapton model.

Doc

I just tighten the springs (5). It seems to work.
