My favorite strat is my American Deluxe Strat, a triple single coil model I modded with an LSR nut. (Well, I had a tech do so.) It's fantastic! I love the balanced sound of the pickups, the feel of the neck, it stays in tune. There's nothing wrong or problematic with that guitar as far as I'm concerned. The wood is incredibly resonant. It's perfect in every way.

A touch off-topic, here, but an occasional "mod" I'll do to the tone of my SSS Strat is, turning the tone controls all the way down and cranking the volume control. I'm still working on developing something original, for that, but the effect is a rich and bassy "fuzz" without being too muddy.

I tried a bunch but was never impressed. The standards didn't feel right. The Highway Ones were close but not perfect. Then I tried a Clapton Blackie and was hooked. Took me 6 years to pull the trigger but she's mine now!!

The why: it feels so right. The neck is amazing. It sounds great.

The EJ

I'll have to second that comment. The other guitar player in my country band bought the Eric Johnson model. I played it once and fell in love with it. I have a MIM standard and the neck feels much better on the EJ model. However, the pickups and the ones on my MIM are just as noisy. But I think for most of those classic sounds (pickups) you have to sacrifice some noise in order to get the true vintage tone. Just have to invest in a noise gate or use a modeling amp which tends to not pick up the noise. My old line 6 was whisper quiet, but now I have the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe all tube combo and there's plenty of noise on the dirty channel as you increase the drive level.

There are so many good strats. The MIM standards always seem to impress me. I played a 50s classic player that just blew me away in playability and tone. But overall I would have to say me AV62 RI. Not only is it a fantastic looking instrument(olympic white) but it just has that feel. I think there is a strat out there for everyone. My 62 never fails to put a smile on my face.

A 1966 pre-CBS sunburst that a buddy of mine owned

It played real nice and the tone was very unique. It was a very nice guitar. I am not choosing this one because it was the oldest that I have ever played ... it really was a nice git.

1966 is not pre -CBS. It is CBS.

My favorite strat is the american deluxe. With the S-1 and Sumarian Cobalt noisless pups. Out of all the strats Ive played and owned this was the most varried in sounds and playabilty. Very comfortable soft V neck. the only thing is I wish it had a nitro finish. The S-1 switching is great.

My Clapton Strat is easily the best and most versatile I've played. It may possibly be the best guitar I've ever played, and I've played many.

The best one I've played on? My new '08 MIA Std. Incredible sound and great playability. The necks on these new ones are fantastic! I'm sure there are some custom shop models out there that may play/sound better but I really like mine. Plus, it just looks like what I've always envisioned a Strat to be: 3-tone sunburst with maple fb.
