I did'nt realise you had blocked the tremolo. The springs are not hurting anything being in there, but if you take them out, then you'll have the claw moving freely in the tremolo cavity. You'll want to remove the screws and the claw in that case. When I remove the springs, I just use a small flat tip screwdriver, and I insert it in between the spring coils instead of the hook loop. Very carefully lift it over the hook and let the tension draw back before trying to lift it. Or, use a small vise grip pliers to lift the right angle hook out of the inertia block.

Yes I do, and I can proudly say that after a total of about two months with my first Strat, I broke it. :D

Stewart-MacDonald sell this tool for changing the springs on Strat trems:

http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tools/Speci ... aller.html

Personally, I feel Stew-Mac get quite enough of my money without running to novelty type tools. I find if my bare fingers are struggling then a small screwdriver or pliers do just fine, whatever they say on that page.

But there's probably someone here who just can't do without one more guitar tool...

Cheers - C

I believe I once used a screwdriver, but every other time I used my fingers (most of the time relieving the tension on the springs first by pulling up on the trem bar).

If you remove the springs you need to solder some wire from the trem claw to the tremblock. Otherwise you get terrible buzz.

Bought a highway 1 HSS on 2006.....first thing I did was replace the whammy with a hard tail bridge.......Makes everything soooooo much easier and the sustain is out of this world!!!!!

I rarely use mine and I'd be tempted to replace it using one or another of the solutions I've been reading here. But just when I think "go ahea," someone will ask me for an old surf or Rock-a-billy tune and it would be difficult to hit some of those just right without the whammy.

With only one Strat and the occasional call, I leave it on and functional.

I played in bands for a living through most of the '70's and I never had a guitar with a whammy bar.
I bought my first Strat back in '99 and it made me wonder how I ever got along without one all those years.
I love the whammy bar and use it often for subtle effects on my Strats and my Gretsches.
Have a listen to Steve Lukather (Toto), he uses his very often and very tastefully IMO.
