Agreed, I keep a whammy bar or two around for surf, but all of the other guitars have no bars. In fact, my '05 American Series Strat is still a virgin.

I use the whammy bar from time to time. I sometimes use it for bomb sounds when i wanna have fun. My whammy bar sort of doesn't fit in, it's a little too small. SO it jiggles around, and sometimes makes this squeaking sound when i move it. I use that to my advantage, because this squeaking sound sustains and i move the bar down to make a bomb sound. Then a play the open e really hard and then mute it so it's an explosion :) Or i just use harmonics.

HARMONICS + WHAMMY BAR= AWESOME

SOmetimes i 'feel' there has to be a down bend somewhere. You can't do downbends with your hand. Though i use my fret hand more than the bar, i fee that it is what makes a strat a strat, and gives a unique vibe to it.

I only use my whammy bar when I'm playing songs that use it. I leave it of when I'm not

I use it a bit. I don't go crazy, but I like to have a little fun with it. I use it enough to want one on my two other guitars, a Les Paul BFG and Ibanez SZ520.

I use it quite a bit,
Didn't use it at all for the longest time (probebly because my playing wasn't up to par back then), Swapping my syncro bridge for a 2 pivot (yea hell of a job) i started using it much more. I installed 5 springs and really i love how it's stiff enough for lots of bending but not to stiff to make whammy usage a nightmare... dive bombs are another story... :)

Tremolo bar is why I got a strat. Yes, there was a lot of whammy bar misuse in the 80's. But if you look at Hendrix, EVH, and especially Jeff Beck, you can see the potential of learning how to use the tremolo arm. I've been trying to get a grip on Beck's trem use since I got my Highway One. Surprisingly, the vintage trem stays in tune pretty well. I'm trying to work on bending the notes down a half or whole step, while pulling off, trying to work the bar to make sure it stays in key (not sure if this makes 100% sense). Here is a video of Beck doing some amazing things. This is what I'm trying to do with the trem bar (eventually!) rather than the same old stuff.

i use the tremolo arm often
that is why i use only Fender bullets string
personally i prefer vintage 6 screw style bridge
it does everything a Floyd Rose can do
with the exception of letting all string loose at the nut
they feel better controlled while being played
believe that whammy bar is more for rock
which explains why some blues guitarist opt for hard tail

After many tries to get my tremolo to stay in tune I decided to screw it down and block it. Best decision ever! I now have much greater sustain and virtually no tuning issues.

I don't miss it too much! I hardly used is due to the tuning issues.

The only reason I don't use a wammy is to be able to detune my guitar easier.
I have 1 strat that has the wammy locked back to the body.
The rest of my guitars are floating.
I plan to set it up to float soon. I love wammy.
I use it extreme and subtle... to me its just another change up on vibrato.
Or just an extreme effect all together.
I also have a guitar with a floyd rose & an edge trem.

I use my whammy from time to time, mostly at the end of songs or if I'm really messing around with a solo.

I mostly use mine for chord vibrato(wildly at times), all bending and single note vibrato is done by hand. I keep it floating, mostly for a more true sounding vibrato, but also to get that 'fluttering' sound when I want it. When I play my Strats the bar is on them, not because I use it on everything, but for when the moment strikes. If I was unable to keep a Strat in tune with trem use, I'd take it to a tech and tell them not to call me back until it would stay in tune. Thankfully, I don't need to do that.

Ditto to what M Brown says.

Often don't touch my bar for several numbers at a time, and when I do my hand is usually relatively light; just a nice Bigsby-ish shimmer. I certainly can't do all that ear-popping EVH and Jeff Beck stuff. But I can rip into it occasionally and even dive bomb to the wood without intonation issues. (Something's going wrong if your trem doesn't keep decent pitch, and you need to look into it.)

Strange thing: though I often don't use it for hours, soon as I pick up my Les Paul there's sure to come a moment when my hand goes searching for my whammy - I miss it when it isn't there!

Cheers - C

I still say the man for the bar is Ritchie Blackmore. No one uses it like him. He uses it very wildly & freaky.
