Greetings. Am looking at buying a '68 MIJ Stratocaster re-issue. I have zero experience with MIJ guitars. What is the quality of MIJ, compared, say, to the MIM? Thanks.

I've never owned one, so I'm not speaking from personal experience... but from what I've read, MIJ quality rivalled MIA quality. I have messed around with a couple older ('80's) MIJs and was very impressed.

Some regard MIJs are significantly better, some (particularly MIM owners) would say not.

You can even find folks who will claim that Japanese production quality is better than Fender's American plant, though that idea would raise howls of rage from many quarters. However, back in the early '80s Fender's new management were on record as saying that the Japanese output was way ahead of what they could do at the (then) Fullerton plant: people were reported as being almost in tears wondering how they could match it.

US production effectively ceased for a period when Fullerton closed and Corona hadn't started yet, and the Japanese output effectively saved the company at a very dicey moment in its history. Which is why to this day Japanese Fenders have a special place in our hearts, and have never been mere cheap product at the budget end of the range.

On the other hand, things have been a whole lot different at the American operation for a long time: no need to worry about quality there, these days.

Cheers - C

I am one of the one's that think the mid 80's MIJ's are better than/equal to MIA's.
2 or 3 years ago Fender was making a CIJ '68 RI that was an excellent guitar and better than the MIM's in my opinion.

I'm saving up for an American Strat but after that I would like to venture into getting MIM and MIJ strats as like... secondary guitars ( :? )
Does MIJ fender have like a website or whatever because I'd like to have a good look at some?
