A friend of mine has a strat he got for christmas a while back and wants to sell to me. It is a black HSS strat that says by the sn that it was made in 2006-7 in Mexico. It has a floyd rose tremelo and locking tuners(bolts on neck by tuners), maple fingerboard and on the back of the headstock it has a little diamond with a 60 in it. The frets look perfect, and he never really learned to play, so it sat there collecting dust. He wanted $350, but I talked him down to $240 on a whim. Should I buy it, or just save a bit more and buy a standard strat? I havent played it through an amp, so I don't know how the humbucker sounds. Should I just get a reguler strat or is the humbucker a good sound without destroying the sound of strats that I like so much? Is the Floyd rose a good or bad thing on a strat? How about the locking tuners? Can I just not use them? Thanks for all of the help on this, he wants to know tomorrow or he will try to sell it to another guy.

It sounds like a good deal to me.

You'll get the "real" strat sounds using the neck pickup ...
and good heavy sounds using the humbucker ...
it's like two guitars in one! And with the Floyd Rose, you can do lots of tricks!

Go For It.

Strats like that run for about $500, its a pretty good deal, but the Floyd Rose will cause you a world of trouble. Otherwise, its a great idea!

Thanks! Why would the Floyd cause me trouble? Are they a pain even if I don't use them much? Is the little diamond with the 60 a 60th anniversary emblem or something?

The diamond is a 60th anniversary logo.

As for the Flyod Rose Temelo...it is a real pain in the butt to change the strings. I would suggest getting someone who knows what they are doing to show you how it's done.

So if I get it would I be better off to change the floyd rose out for an original bridge? Are there a bunch of different ones? Thanks again for the help.

I would say the extra work changing strings isn't that big of a deal. Hopefully you won't be changing them all the time. The best thing to do is play it for a few months and see if you would like it better with a different brige.

1st of all - great deal on the guitar!

Floyd Rose tremolos are larger than most bridges and might prove difficult to exchange and there is no use even trying to change the locking nut. But hey, a Floyd Rose isn't so bad. Maximum tuning stability for whammy bar action. The string changing situation can be overcome. Most people cut the ball end off the string before putting the string in the saddle and locking it. (The lock bolts on the bridge & nut will take more time but are as simple to operate). Once I broke a string and needed to change it quickly and strung it up backwards (the ball end catching on the tuning post). The results so great that I began to always string that guitar up that way. It's easy. Run the string through the tuning post and pull until the ball catches. Pre cut the end of the string a few inches or so past the bridge in order to leave enough string to wind. Lock it in the saddle & tune it up. Then lock the nut.

This may not be a Nike campaign, but with a price like that for what it is...JUST DO IT!
