I am in the market for a Custom Shop Strat.
I have seen two that I really like.
One is a 1959 in sunburst, the other is a 1960 in Sea Foam Green.

The 1959 has clay dots, I really like the look of that.
The 1960 hasn’t. That one comes with the silver dots (it says Micarta White Position Dots) but has a real dark rosewood fretboard that I really like. The board on the 1959 is a lighter color.

I always thought that Fender, since 1959, always used clay dots for their rosewood-boards until they switched over to the ‘silver’ ones a few years later.
I was a little confused when I saw a 1960 Custom Shop Strat without clay dots.

What’s the story? I would like to know more about this.
If real vintage Fenders from that period sometimes came with clay dots and sometimes didn’t, what was the reason for that? Does it have anything to do with the Sea Foam Green color? Maybe Fender did not do clay dots on that color? I did see clay dots on vintage Surf Green Strats but never on Sea Foam Green I think.

Could it be the 60's style one is a rip off?

Alternatively, if the guitar was commissioned, then perhaps that is what the buyer wanted.

+1

A distinct possibility given the nature of a custom instrument.
