Hello

Just emptied the loft as moving and found my 30 year old fender !! I had it at school for a year but then never used it ... it’s in mint condition - would like to sell it but don’t know how to find out it’s worth - I was told by a friend years ago it was special mainly due to its color? I paid just over £1000 30 years ago. It’s serial number is E474072 made in USA.... any advice would be appreciated

You can research what people are asking for them at your popular selling sites. By now; every non-sheltered adult should know where people buy and sell used gear on-line.

Find a few similar to yours....add up the asking prices....divide by the number of how many you found....use that "AVERAGE" number as your starting point.

Sound advice.

30 year old Strats are still in the "second hand/used" market and are a good bit away from the price of a vintage Strat.

There were some good guitars from the 80's / 90's but I can't think of anything that makes them especially desirable or worth over and above a similar guitar made in the last 10 years.

The issue you have is that guitar production quality has increased significantly over the last few years so unless yours is really really good/light/has great sustain or something it may not stand above later guitars as being special and thus command a greater value to someone.

Found out in another forum that it’s a dusty rose colour - one sold at Christie’s with a famous owner for 100,000 US dollars not so long ago ... perhaps will not use that one in my calculation of a price bracket!!! Decided to put it back in the attic .... thanks for your input.

My best advice at this point would be to NOT stick it in a case or box and shove it in the corner of an overly hot and/or overly cold attic and "forget about it". By the time it's worth something....it won't be worth anything. Instruments "rot" (for lack of a better term) in an uncontrolled environment.

P.S.- If Eric Clapton didn't own and play this guitar in public view, you aren't EVER gonna get close to $100,000 regardless of how long that thing rots in your attic.

That would be akin to storing an original-condition '65 tri-power Pontiac GTO under an apple tree at grandpa's orchard for thirty years in hopes that the limbs and the foliage would keep birdshit, acid rain, and ultraviolet sun rays from destroying the paint.

Wise up!

It isn't worth $100K but it is worth something.

What it is worth today probably wont change for a great many years so there isn't much point hanging on to it on the off chance it will appreciate. Some old stuff will become Vintage and some old stuff is just gets older.

It could be that someone has a hankering for it because they had one as a kid and so it will have added value if you hook up with that person. I bought a pretty poor guitar a bit back, that just hangs on the wall, for no other reason than I had one as a kid and seeing it makes me smile. Even for the modest price I paid I could have bought a far better playing guitar, but that wasn't the point.

Your guitar is worth what ever someone will pay for it. They ain't paying nuffin' if it rots in a corner/attic/basement/wardrobe/garage etc.

It reminds me of my teens and have enjoyed having it around tbh!!! Another 10 years and will no doubt feel the same .... it holds more sentimental value than the few ooo’s it’s worth ... I’m keeping it!!

If that be the case then store it respectfully, like the personal treasure it is.

£1k was a lot of money for a Strat back then! My Strats bought new around that time were around £600.

"Decided to put it back in the attic"...?! Why not play it?!!! :)
Cheers - Peter.

Sounds to me like lillybud may have purchased it to take lessons at school. Might be they lost interest immediately, and put the guitar in storage for 30 years...probably haven't picked up a guitar in that amount of time.
I'd at least hang it (or set it on a guitar stand) in my living room so I can look at it daily. Clean it, and care for it from time to time.
