Hello All,
I have a couple of Fender Stratocaster XII's, both MIJ's between 2002-2004. I'm looking to replace the machine heads as the ones that come stock are just plain hard to figure out when changing strings. They have this diabolical straight slot locking post that must be twisted open slightly to accept the new string, but not so much as to require more than about a half turn to lock, which makes sliding the string into the post a nightmare. Maybe I'm missing something ??? I searched a bit for technical info on the guitar and machine heads but found nothing. Anyway, the tuners are very tight on the back of the headstock, but I'm wondering if there are other Fender locking tuners that might fit. Thoughts ? Suggestions ?
Thanks,
Design Farmer

I have a pic to post, but have not be3n able to figure that out either

I have a Strat XII from 2005 and it came with split-post Gotoh tuners styled like the Kluson Deluxe machines that Fender used from 1954 up until the late '60s. They are not locking tuners. Restringing, while frustrating at times, requires the same procedure as a vintage 6-string Strat or re-issue from that era.

Thanks Arjay,
Neither of my Strats are split top tuning machines. They do lock after sliding the string through the post hole, provided you get them tightly fit to start, otherwise you are required to turn the post lock way too far in the wrong direction before winding the string. I have a bunch of guitars with lockers and non-lockers and these are the worst of all ... that’s why I’m trying to figure out if I can get a suitable Fender replacement ... if not, I’ll look into other brands.

I'd like to see a pic of your tuners if you can swing it.

I've never seen a factory-installed locking tuner on a Strat XII -- either the originals from the '80s or the re-issues from the 2000's.

Thanks again Arjay,
You solved it for me. With your lead to look into the Gotoh tuners I found a video about how to “manage” them. I’m actually pretty handy, but I had been working them all wrong.

I love these Strat 12’s. I grew up playing double humbuckers on conventional 6 strings, but switched to playing 12’s nearly exclusively in about 1980. The three single coils gave me fits for awhile, but one of my Strats is now FrankenStrat with two Seymour Duncan P-Rails that pretty faithfully reproduce the three single coil sound. I also have other 12’s In my collection ... Rickenbacker, Vox, Ibanez, Tama and Ovation, but the Strats rule.

Arjay,
Here’s a YouTube link that shows my tuners and how they should work.

Both used ... both mint condition ... purchased about 10 years ago from different sources.

It's all very clear to me now.
