Hi! I need help identifying this telecaster/partscaster/frakenstein... Someone is offering it up in a trade vs a banjo I rarely use, valued around $200. Here's the story I have:

"I bought this guitar used from (insert local reputable music shop). It's a fender thinline semi hollow body with a custom ordered neck. There are "imperfections". The previous tried to relic the body but we refinished it. There's no cracks in the body though. It plays well and the neck is very straight. I don't know what the pick ups are on it right now but I'm giving you some extra pickups from previous fenders. Also an extra bridge is a fender replacement from an authorized fender dealer on ebay."

So what do you guys think? No serial # on neck, which makes me think it's sketchy. My money is on a squier body/fender maple neck.

Can't see the pictures either but for something you don't use valued at $200 you might not go far wrong....well $200 wrong perhaps but then it is a redundant $200 anyway.

Why don't you post this question on the TELECASTER sub-forum, where it belongs?

No

Looking at the other forum the body looks like a mahogany derivative which suggests to me it isn't Fender. The black ferrule might indicate a MiM neck but that is the only indication there of.

The Modern Player 22 fret neck is an exception with FMIC products; it has no overhang so taking the neck off might help validate/deny that guess.

Generally on the guitar, I'd guess a "mix&match product with miscellanious parts and without any significant monetary value".

And the pic quality is low; even the fretboard dots are hard to see.

So, in answer to the original question - Is it a good swap for a $200 banjo?

I don't really know. Is $200 beyond really cheap for a banjo? If the banjo is worth more than $200 then I think you could be being fleeced. If the guitar has a Fender neck then that alone might be worth up to $200 ,perhaps, so maybe worth a go.

The body wood still worries me though and I would suggest that it isn't Fender related.

It's an old Kay Banjo, from 60s most probably... not really sure of monetary value, but I guestimated it at $200 and put it up for sale. I never play it, so if the tele plays ok it's a good trade if only to take on a project.

Like you said, if the neck is legit it's worth it.

Plus, I'd probably have an easier time flipping the tele than the banjo.

I'll let you know how she plays and take some better pics!
