Your opinion: Should be whatever you think, not me.
My opinion: American Standard Strat is the best, period.

But there must be a reason for the american standard being more costly. Probably just the thicker finish, bridge, and maybe better pickups.

When it comes down to these two, cheaper just might be better :)

And does anyone notice the highway one 'feel?' Is it made of ash or something? It feels more like natural wood rather than the paint. Is it because of the finish?

Whatever, american standards are awesome, highway ones are awesome. MiM's too. the only thing that doesn't give em claim to fame is the sticker that says made in mexico.

That's exactly one of the reasons the Highway 1 is cheper. It uses a different and cheaper finish, I can't remember whether it's a polyethelene finish whereas an American Standard uses a polyester, or vice-versa but the guitar dealer said one of the reasons it's cheaper is becuase a cheaper finish is used and he said when he lays his arm over the top of the Highway One he can see a big smudge type mark from his arm. So yes, this is definitely one of the reason the Highway One is cheaper. Still made in USA though.

the highway one is made from the same alder and maple woods
that the american standards are made of. there not made from cheap woods. the highway one is also made buy the same craftsman in corona
california. the finish is a classic nitro finish that was used back in
the 50's and 60's. the highway one comes with custom shop designd alnico
III pick ups. i find these pick ups to be more tone versatile than the ones in the new american standard. the american standard comes with a case the highway one doesnt (gig bag) fender did that for a reason to keep the price down. the american standard superior over the highway one? not even close in my book. the highway one has the american standard beat by a mile when it comes to tone versatility and sustain.

yeah i think the bridge on the highway one helps sustain.

WHat is your favorite color on the highway one? Not too many of them, but i like sunburst and flat black (too bad there's no more daphne blue).

SO when i have the money, i think i am going to choose the highway one over the american standard.

JUst another question:do any one of you think the highway one line of guitars needs any more upgrades?

The poll is biased because you put it on a strat forum and put the option highway one telecaster, making it biased.

I think it's all about personal taste.
I have an Am. Strat, bought in '90 and some other guitars as backup or for different sounds.

About 6 months ago I decided that I needed a Tele (had one before, Squier, but that's just not what you need).

Since my Strat is 'my main thing' I looked around for an affordable Tele end ended up with the Tele Highway One Upgrade. Sorry, not about the Strat version BUT to give you an idea....

I really love the tone, and sparkling sound. That's why I bought it. It's solid built and the finish is not that 'shiny' of course but looks great (although great sound to me is more important than great looks...)

I saw some discussions above about the finish, it's thin nitrocellulose lacquer finish,.. if you want to know ;-)

My co-guitar player in my band plays an American Standard Tele, but to be honest... nobody in the band has been able to tell the difference so far.

One thing you might need to get 'used to' are the Jumbo Frets though, at first I was a bit sceptic about them because when you press the string really hard it gets a bit outta tune (logical of course).... you need to get used to it and once you are used to it... no probs at all.

For me it's a great guitar, the Alnico III pickups sound really great and for me .... it's provided me we with the sound I want from this guitar. As a reference some songs I play on it:

Message in a bottle - The Police
Hump the bump - The Red Hot Chili Peppers
Long train running - Doobie Brothers
A couple of Springsteen songs (Bobby Jean for instance)

Good luck with your choice ;-)

Regards,
Marc

well just did some investagation because i'm very amazed how the american standard since yesterday was in a dead heat with the highway one and now with in 1 houre it jumps ahead by fore. so this is what i found that at least 3 of you have accounts showing months old BUT no post not a one but you have voted? somthing very funny about this. i think its time to close this thread because there is now cheating going on to keep the american standard ahead. bottom line its not going to change anyones mind about the great highway one. to me the american standard is nothing more than a pretty piece of wood end of story.

I own a Highway One. I planned to buy a Mexican, and I was stunned to find it on sale for a fraction of the cost of a Standard.

The Highway One has a thin nitro finish that's very resonant and light, but won't wear like the Standard's finish. The Highway One's got the classic five-point bridge with stamped steel and chrome, where the Standard's got stainless steel and a two-point bridge. If you do a lot of extreme whammy stuff, you'll probably notice the difference. I don't use the whammy much, preferring left-hand vibrato and old-school blues. The Highway One's got AlnicoIII p'ups that are very hot, but not vintage sounding. They sound good for blues with the gain up a bit, and also get a glassy sound from the bridge. The Alnico V pickups in the Standard sound very sweet to me. When I upgraded my Highway One to CS Tx Specials, I found a great tone. In the bridge or bridge mid with the gain up near 12 and the reverb off and the guitar tone down to 3 that's a killer SRV vibe. For shattering sweet tone I can back up the gain and up the reverb and get classic Alnico V vintage tone, although these CS TX specials are not nearly as hot as the standard Highway Ones. So out of the box, with no mods, I give the edge to the Standard because I like Alnico Vs. The tuners on the Standard are upgraded also, although my guitar stays in tune really well and so I'm not changing mine.

All in all, you get what you pay for. The Highway One is an excellent guitar and a great value. It can be upgraded in pieces as well. Fender puts a little higher-end hardwar onto the Standard and charges more. I love my modded Highway One - not one of the Standard's upgrades would be something for my playing. So, it depends on how you play.

All in all, for another Strat as circumstances allow, I'd go with the Flame Maple Top HSS Deluxe to get the premium features, a humbucker for when i want that sound and the unique SCN noiseless sound out of the neck, which I like. I hate the SCN noiseless bridge. So that's another alternative. Fender might upgrade the Deluxe next year and I'm looking forward to see what they do with it. They did the Highway in '06 and then just did the Standard.

It's possible that people who haven't posted voted. Not likely though. I don't think it's possible to cheat except for people using two logon's. If you think thats a problem you could ask Brad to see if some of those who voted have two votes from the same IP.
