I have seen a lot of comparison between these two. Sorry if this was already posted, just didn't see it. SOme say that the highway one is better because of the finish, headstock, colors, blah blah. I wanted to hear your opinions, because both are very nice guitars. I had the pleasure of brushing my hand against a highway one... the closest i'll ever get. I would probably prefer the highway one because of the bridge and the tone circuit. Also because of that headstock (although that's less important to me).

American standards are a little better quality, though usually they're the same, no? Although the american standard has my favorite colors... olympic white and sienna sunburst.

Or would some of you prefer the highway one tele? Both have vintage bridges.

I would vote for Am Std. Here in Ontario, Canada HWY1 is typically $250 -300 less which can buy you a bunch of other stuff. From playability and looks As Std just worked better for me. I found HWY1 resonance was lot better unplugged but when plugged my ears could hear very little difference.

Cheers.

if ihad the choice between both, am std.
i have both.
i love them both.
i like the smaller headstock on the am.
2 point trem. pickups are very nice.

i like the sustain on the hwy 1, the finish is feels nice.

i like to crank the gain 8, dial the tone to 1, and just listen the the tone.
both guitars give me great bluesy tones. feels balsier.

I see now that it is tied between the american std and the hwy1. So i am assuming that for the money, the highway one is the way to go. And even if the price was a factor, would u still choose the am std?

Also, how is the two point trem? I have actually never played a two point, so i am just curious.

The AlNiCo V pickups give a more vintage like tone than the AlNiCo III on the highway one i assume. But the alnico III, according to logic, should have less hum as the magnet isn't as strong. Or is there another difference?

Since i am not exactly rich, i would go for the highway one :D

if you want the tone versatility and the sustain
the highway one is the strat. if you just want the
classic tone go with the amstd. i prefer tone versatility
and sustain over the just classic tone. good luck to ya eaither way.

I'll be getting one of those when i graduate highschool... that's not too far away is it? ONly five years... :)

I find that the only case where a desire for a material possession that seems to be better than yours is that when you have a low end squier like i do. I would give my t.v. to have something that says in large letters FENDER. Naw that is a little extreme. I would sell my clarinet that my dad bought for 500 bucks for me (which is not sold anymore, which might give it a higher desirability), but my parents need the money more than i do :( ... but i could take out several dozen dollars from the money do get myself what i have wanted since i got my guitar, a wah :)

LoL i have high hopes.

But there must be a reason for the american standard being more costly. Probably just the thicker finish, bridge, and maybe better pickups.

When it comes down to these two, cheaper just might be better :)

And does anyone notice the highway one 'feel?' Is it made of ash or something? It feels more like natural wood rather than the paint. Is it because of the finish?

Whatever, american standards are awesome, highway ones are awesome. MiM's too. the only thing that doesn't give em claim to fame is the sticker that says made in mexico.

the highway one still cost between $750 to $825 all depends
were you buy it and some places run special sales on the highway one.
to me more does not mean better. the highway one is the workhorse
of the strats. its tone and sustain and the nitro finish is what
made me want it over the new american standard. some times
its the plain jane thats better and in this case the plain jane is the highway one and i feel its a better strat than the american standard.

Both have vintage-style saddles now, but I guess you are right about the Am Std having a bit better quality (in terms of hardware and perhaps wood quality). The Am Std does have some higher-end features (bi-flex neck, two point bridge, and glossy finish), but the Highway One has the Greasebucket tone circuit.

The Highway One is a great value for a MIA guitar.

That's exactly one of the reasons the Highway 1 is cheper. It uses a different and cheaper finish, I can't remember whether it's a polyethelene finish whereas an American Standard uses a polyester, or vice-versa but the guitar dealer said one of the reasons it's cheaper is becuase a cheaper finish is used and he said when he lays his arm over the top of the Highway One he can see a big smudge type mark from his arm. So yes, this is definitely one of the reason the Highway One is cheaper. Still made in USA though.

I had a related question: If you could get a 3-year old Am. Deluxe (or Standard, if you prefer) or a new Highway 1, which would you prefer? I'm debating that myself, at least in theory.
