This is just bizarre but here goes.
So I shielded my American Standard Strat with copper foil...thoroughly.
It has Vintage Noiseless pickups.
Now, and this happen ONLY with the neck pickup, the 5th fret harmonic will not sound. It just thuds with a faint harmonic in the background.
The 4th harmonic fret is as loud as the 7th or 12th fret.
But this does not happen with the middle or bridge pickups...they are as loud as they were before shielding.
I have tried adjusting pickup height and new strings and straight into various amps. Btw unplugged it sounds normal at 5th fret...I'm stumped.
Any ideas? How could shielding have had this effect? So weird?? :D

If you have noiseless pickups, what compelled you to apply shielding foil?

These are the older Vintage Noiseless pickups and even with them I was getting a lot of noise. Turned out there a bios setting in my computer that causes the motherboard to blast out a bunch of weird radio frequencies :) I turned that off but the noise didn't completely disappear. So, since I hoped to also be able to put the stock pickups back in, I went head and shielded it...can't hurt I thought.

As for the problem with the harmonics, over on the Strat-talk forum it was explained to me that the Neck pickup is directly below the node for the 5th and 24th fret harmonics. So there's no vibration there for the pickup to grab.

Anyway, mystery solved ")
