Hmmm, I would think there would be quite a few MIJ Strats on eBay, but I don't "shop" there, so if you say so ....

I have purchased MIJ instruments (no Fender however) directly from Japanese music shops. One of the biggest retailers is Ishibashi. They are no longer supposed to sell the new non-export Fender models out of Japan, but you can check their used stock at www.ishibashi.co.jp/u_box

There are other retailers, of course, but some aren't so English-speaking friendly. And a word of warning, the shipping rates will be high, perhaps $140 to the US now. European buyers have tariffs and VATs which will add to the price.

Fuji Gen Gakki no longer makes the Fender Japan models. The current factories are reportedly: Tokai (making the non-export) and Dyna (which makes the MIJ that are sold in the US). I believe you have to go back to pre-1997 to find a Fuji Gen Fender (the old models that say "Made in Japan" as opposed to "Crafted in Japan").

I believe I read something recently that said all Fender Dealers in Japan have stopped shipping to the U.S.

Yes, the way I heard it is was that they have stopped shipping new models, but that they will still ship a used guitar to the US.

Back to the OP, a high-end MIJ Strat with a Floyd Rose is model HST-71FRT which goes new for 130,000 Yen. HST means "Historic Strat," "71" means it has 1971 Strat styling (large CBS headstock), and "FRT" stand for ... it looks pretty nice. Google that model number and drool at what you find

I'm in the UK. British Fender outlets generally sell MIJs right alongside their MIA, MIM, MIK etc stock, mostly at prices somewhere between MIM and MIA. I bought a Japanese '75 Reissue Jazz Bass at an attractive price.

I also know of several specialists online who import direct from Japan and sell to the public at prices that include all taxes and duties paid. Two of these are:

http://www.mijfenders.com/

http://www.guitaremporium.co.uk/

The first of those is significantly cheaper - but I notice they don't give a real world postal address, which always makes me a little uncomfortable. I have not used them so can't speak for or against.

The second is an offshoot of Charlie Chandler's Guitar Experience, a very reputable and upmarket guitarshop-to-the-stars in West London. I have purchased a MIJ Strat from them and found them utterly reliable. They ship to the US: the prices they quote will include all European Union taxes, but of course will not include any additional import tariffs the US government chooses to levy. That's between you and your politicians!

If you don't see what you want on their website it is worth enquiring: they can apparently order most Fenders made in Japan.

Mind you, I'd be amazed if there aren't people offering this kind of service in the US - should I be amazed?

Cheers - C
