Do you block the trem in the floating position or flush with the body of the guitar?

I'd have to say most block their trems with the bridge pretty much level with the body, turning it into a hardtail. You don't have to use a block though. You can just add 5 spring and adjust to level. That's more then stable enough.

And I would assume that the trem should be screwed down tight at the front?

It seems that many well known guitarists come up with various and assorted gimmicks on or for their guitars. Some do work, some don't, some simply aren't necessary. Case in point:

With a Strat, if the 5 springs are installed and the string claw is tightened up along with the six tremolo screws to hold the tremolo plate flush to the body, there' absolutely no need for a block. FWIW, I've seen several Strat owners set up their tremolos in this manner and then in a moment of verification and/or outright stupidity, snap the tremolo arm off in the block trying to flex the immobilized tremolo.

I went with four springs with no claw adjustment. Doing so gets me the tuning stability, plus I can still use the trem if I want. It is the best of both worlds. The fourth spring brought the bridge flush with the body so that it stays in tune forever if I do not use the trem.

My Clapton Strat has a block of wood behind the tremolo block and it's rock solid. Also if you take out the whammy bar - you won't have to worry about snapping it off by mistake.

DONT screw the front of the trem down. The bridge will be in a permanent floating possition and it wont move forwards or backwards at all, and it could end up damaging the guitar too. Just tighten the spring claw screws and block the back of the trem between the block and the body.

By blocking the trem I was able to remove a spring and have a convenient place to put a battery if I go with the EMG pups. I also removed the trem arm!

You don't have to put a wooden block in to bring your bridge flush to the body, just adjust the claw screws inside and you'll see the tremelo raise up until it's flush with the body.
