Hi everyone!
This is my first topic and it is not a happy one unfortunately.

I wanted to get my 2015 USA Strat refreted by a person who is making custom guitars for almost 20 years. When I got the guitar, there were marks all over the fretboard.
He said it was caused to to I had bigger frets and he did not want to sandpaper the guitar cause it was only 5 years old and fretboard was in good condition.

I'm am posting a photo as follows and awaiting your kind comments & expertise.

Find a new luthier.

That fretboard should've been scuffed smooth with #2000-grit and re-lacquered prior to the installation of the new frets.

It wasn't because the guitar was "only" 5 years old.
If it needs a refret, it needs a refret.
If it needs a refret, it needs to be done properly.

This was not done properly.

I wonder if the person who re-fretted it the 1st time would be willing to reimburse the cost to fix it?
Have you spoken to him about correcting or reimbursing costs. I would also ask the Luther correcting the issue if they could give you something in writing to prove it had to be corrected.

Agreed! I had a maple board Strat refretted - under 5 years old - and you'd never know it didn't come out of the factory with those frets. My luthier advised before the job that re-lacquering might be necessary - he said it all depended how the old frets came out, but I was lucky and the neck didn't need it.

My luthier is an artist, though. Never any BS either. Seemingly different to yours, unfortunately.

Cheers - Peter.

_______________

Building and repair guitar is two different thing.

Most people building cars can't repair them.
Plumber building water system in new house may not be able to repair a faucet.
You want more ?

You are on a roll, go for it. :-)

I do agree though. Re-fretting is a completely different beast to installing frets on a virgin board. Removing frets can be unpredictable, requiring almost magical empathy with the neck and wood grain. The level of empathy employed in this example doesn't even register on the scale.

You do wonder how people can hand back a job and even consider it might be acceptable.
