Im just about to purchase a strat, been using a tele for a few years and now ive got the bug. ive seen an american special, 2015 hss on reverb but the guy wants 899 i got him down to 800 but im still being told thats way to much. This is assuming that this guitar is in amazing condition. Its the got the colour, pick ups and the frets I want, should i just buy it or hold out for something more reasonably priced? And also, why is there hardly of these for sale? All replies welcome especially people who have owned or played the american special, thanks in advance!

For that price, you can get a brand new one.

Agree, seems high. I own, and do like my Am Spcl.... According to the price guide I have, range would $550 - $725. It listed for $799.00 when I bought it new.

American Performer jumped up $100 this year over the Special MSRP.
$800 would be a good clearance price, but I don't think it would be easy to find a new one at that point.
But I agree that $800 is a little high for a used one.
