Hi All...
Im looking at purchasing a 1989 Japanese Strat for my son from a Muso mate who is downsizing his collection..
It has a reverse headstock, Floyd Rose bridge, single Humbucker, threaded tremolo.
The decals are embeded in the clear coat.
He wants $500 aussie for it ( US $840 approx ).
Pics below for identification..
Should i walk away?
Any guidance will be appreciated.

It's worth whatever you're willing to pay.

If you played it and like the sound and feel, try to haggle the price down.

I agree. It is something of an "acquired taste" in Stratocaster terms so could perhaps be worth over the odds to someone who really want s that guitar. If he didn't connect with that person though a more traditional Strat buyer might not thank you if you gave it to them, so it would be worth next to nothing in their eyes.

This is then your quandary. You could pay top dollar for it, if you really want it, but then end up with a guitar, if you wanted to sell, which would be worth next to nothing...if you couldn't connect with someone of similar taste.

I think I would play hard ball and offer him low and wait. He may sell it at the high price, but he may well not.

It all comes down to how much do you want it really.

Please accept I am oldish, and extremely grumpy, and come in the "wouldn't thank you if you gave it to me" camp (I guess the Pick ups would be worth having but I would struggle to use the neck and then I would end up building another guitar that I don't need). So please take my comments with a pinch of salt.

I'm with John.
The Floyd is a deal breaker.
They are a pain to set up and a pain to tune. Really not something for a beginner.
I have two guitars with Floyds, one is a very nice G&L. I have not touched either of them in abut 20 years.
$840US is about $300-400 high.
Japanese Strats are somewhat collectible, but not so much the "Superstrats"
If the Floyd and humbucker are not the original and were added, then it's not worth half that.

But I understand that used prices are much higher in Oz.

100% right
Too expensive and never a Floyd Rose for a beginner
