Currently I would say Zakk Wylde.

Oooh boy I have a few...probably though, I'd say Dimebag or Dave Mustaine.

Mustaine's strength lies in composition and rhythm playing or riffing.
Top class composer, metallica and just about every other metal band wouldnt be using the 'gallop' rhythm if it wasnt for him. Chris Poland's stuff after he left megadeth is top notch, far better than any of the much publicised crew of that time or since. He's much more in the mold of jeff beck and plays very outside the box whilst still being very melodical.

depends on whether you are talking about best shred guitarist or best metal guitarist.

for best shred, i'd say paul gilbert or john 5.

for best metal guitarist, i say Alexi Laiho.

For shred I'd say Michael Angelo. A lot of people don't know who he is. Just go to the metalmethod.com website and buy the guitar lesson Speed Kills on DVD.

Of course Eddie Van Halen was good and really started it all and a great hard rock (more of a hard rock than metal) guitarist that was great for his day was Ritchie Blackmore.

As far as a shredder Yngwie is excellent!

i would disagree. I think that you could list Zachy Vengeance and Synyster Gates as one of the greatest guitar pairings of metal. Since they play very well together. But neither one is that outstanding of a player on their own. Thats not to say that they cannot play the guitar, just that they are not the best in metal.

But again, they do amazing things when they play together. Sorry if I offended anyone, but this is a forum, and I am just stating my opinion.
