Hi everyone. I've got a question re: the new 2008 Am. Std. I put on "layaway" at GC last week.

I went back today to put more money down on it (I'm 1/3 of the way there!! Woo Hoo!!) and I asked to see it in all of its glory. They brought it out from the back and I must say it was my first view of the new case. Wow, it's very nice and the case candy... Well I almost ran out the front door with it hoping that they wouldn't notice.

Anyway, I noticed that where the neck meets the body of the guitar there's a gap of probably 1/16". After putting it back in the case and watching it go back to the back I picked up a couple other Am. Standards hanging on the wall and compared the neck joint (?) on each and none of them had the gap.

I was wondering if this is a flaw in the guitar that could effect its structural integrity, playability or sustain. I'm sure GC would let me swap the guitar for another one of the same color they have there but I have already spent some "quality" time playing it and really like everything about the guitar.

Is the gap a problem (now or in the future)?

Thanks for your guidance. Maybe I'm making too big of a deal about it but since it's my first MIA I don't want to make a costly mistake.

More information, please. "A gap where the neck meets the body": on one side or other of the neck? Or at the end of the neck? Or beneath the little overhang of the fingerboard extension over the pickguard? Or beneath the under side of the neck?

Be very precise. Answers will follow.

Cheers - C

". . .beneath the little overhang of the fingerboard extension over the pickguard . . ."

Ceri, thanks for the response. I'd say that it's this portion of your post. It's where frets 20-22 or so meet the body/pickguard.

Thanks again for your reply. I hope that I've explained it a little better.

People sometimes get worried about a gap between the top surface of the pickguard and the underneath of that 22nd fret overhang. It is no issue: put your mind at rest.

What you need to be checking for is that the neck is snug to all three sides of the neck pocket (the cavity in the body that receives the neck). Now, if you see a gap there, then that is a different thing entirely. Ways to address that issue on an existing instrument, but if it is not yours already, do yourself a favor and don't buy that guitar.

Cheers - C

Thanks for your replies. Here is a picture I took of my MIM in the area I'm talking about on the MIA that I've got on hold at GC. The point of the plectrum is where the small gap is on the MIA. Sorry it's blurry. It's hard to take such an up-close picture. Thanks again.
