I've read about guys polishing out their hwy 1s but havent seen a whole lot of pics, so I wasnt sure how well those matte nitro finishes would shine up. Well this week I went to town on my 2006 Hwy 1 Strat. I took my time and did it right. Started with 1000 sandpaper. Then 2000, then 3000, then 5000, then turtle wax polishing compound, then a two-stage instrument polishing compound. All told, I spent maybe 2 hours on it.

I'm pretty excited how it came out. Why didn't Fender do this in the first place?

What do ya think?

Fender spared themselves that two man-hours of production costs to keep the retail price down.

Nice job, it looks absolutely gorgeous!

I did the same on my HW1 Telecaster but just went straight in with the buffing wheel. I wasn't unhappy with the satin finish but felt the guitar was a bit of a biohazard and thought it would be the best way to ensure it is clean.

Yours looks great. I'm not a great lover of wax finishing as I don't like the way it feels. But that's just me.

Thanks for the comments.

John: I went the sanding route to knock down the factory orange peel. That's what the 1000 was for, and it's what took the most time. Since the body is black I thought that step was important. I have a sunburst HW1 Tele and just hand polished it. It looks pretty good, but there's still plenty of orange peel. Now that I did the strat I might have to take another look at the tele....

I'm kinda interested to see how the shine stands up over time. I know paint companies put anti-gloss componds in thier matte paints. I don't know if fender did that or not. Pretty happy with it at the moment though!

WTF is Photobucket doing this time?
Images are so blurry I can't tell what it is other than a Strat-like object that may or may not have strings.

What is even more freaky is, on my PC, sometimes they are blurry and sometimes they aren't.

Apparently they announced it last May.
If your usage exceeds 25mb, they blur the images.
Probably related to whether the account is free or how much you are paying.

I'm glad I didn't go back to PB when they reversed their policy of not allowing Hotlinking... and I had their $100/year account... would have been $400 to allow it at the time.
They'd still be getting $100/year from me if they hadn't have gotten stupid.
