Hello all

This is my first post to the forum. I am a relatively novice player. Played some acoustic before but now had luck to purchase 07 MIA Strat. I love this thing the sound and everything. I am now learning scales and solos but I notice that something is missing. I wanted to play some notes to sustain long. Some dudes on you tube and legends like Buddy Guy play some solos with what it seems never ending sustain. They hit one note and let it scream until they decide to mute it. I tried changing the pick attack and cranking the amp up (not to the max, neighbors might not like it for now at least)
and still note dies after a couple of sec. My amp is Fender SuperChamp XD 15w Tube/Solid.

Is it a technique or hardware that doe this? Any suggestions are appreciated (hopefully do not cost too much)

Or better yet, get one that goes to 11. You can go and have a bite--still be hearing that one.

Technique has a lot to do with sustain too as well as your amp and guitar volume, pickups, pickup height and the list goes on and on. A Strat usually won't sustain like say a Les Paul but they do sustain. My 72 Strat sustains really well. That's why years ago Strat players especially tried brass bridges and all kinds of things to increase the mass of the guitar.

technique all the way.
electric guitar in alot of ways is a very different animal to the acoustic as you have probably already found out. You cant hit chords the same way, open string response is different, all kinds of things. You soon get used to it and your technique will almost certainly develop to compensate for these differences.

heres to a painless transition.

Are you talking about over drive? You need to set your amp to overdrive or get them over drive/distortion gadgets.Simple way to get an overdrive signal is to lover the master volume & raise the channel volume. This is the kind of sustain that guys like Santana gets.If you're talking about pickups that has more sustain you might want to try out some expensive pick ups like the ones the pros use on their guitars.

Everything above is completely true. However, a major element in the "sustain equation" is the magical qualities of the guitar itself. Every git is different (even ones that come off the line right next to each other). And some got it more than others, and some don't got it all.

Seems to me there's not enough knowledge out there about the wonders of a good compressor. I think every guitar player should have one. Limiters and compressors are your friend.

These guys that get never ending sustain may be using an overdrive or fuzzbox pedal including the distortion coming from the amp. Santana used a Big Muff fuzzbox in the early days and his sustain was neverending.

What would Chet say about it? That you don't want the pickups too close to the strings (because the magnetic pull can hurt your sustain)?

i have the same problem with sustain- i know its volume though. i only leave it no more than 3. Pretty loud for my bedroom.

WHat amazes me with sustain is hendrix's machine gun.

that part where he hits the high note, bends it and holds it forever with the univibe goin... awesome.

Also doesn't feedback help sustain?

Yeah you can try new pickups or strings. strings affect sustain a lot.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVvtIS2YGVI

watch this youtube video of hendrix's machine gun. go to 4;21 and you'll see what i mean.

vibrato helps sustain a little.

hope i helped.

Thank you all for the great suggestions. I will try full on with the amp first.

nikininja, do you happen to have any examples tips to improve the technique?
I did try to search the net but did not find anything specific to this. Strat is so much better playing instrument. I can play this for hours, if I had time, without a fatigue.

Thanks again

[Belatedly] Not only that: Chet frequently mentions that raising your pickups closer to the strings increases output, lowering them increases sustain (turn the amp up to compensate for lower output). Excellent advice. I'd have posted it myself - but that would be plagiarism.
