As you suggest might be the Japan model which has the F neckplate with an American neck...
Where is the case.
Any doubt and I would pass. :D

What is the story with the strap buttons? Is that a YM feature?

Also, I don't know if it is the picture but there seems to be a really unpleasant mark on the neck. If the neck is nitro finished (I don't know the spec of the YM) it could be the lacquer has reacted with the foam on the guitar stand.

[EDIT]

Always good to look up the specs.

The neck is nitro so, if the guitar was stored on that stand, it could have been damaged by the foam.

YM bodies do have that type of unusual strap lock so that perhaps points towards the authenticity of the body.

2012, the serial number would be in the online database.
I can't make out the number from the pic... do you know what it is?

The neck looks genuine the question and will probably come back ok. The question for me is where is the body from. :D

Going on memory and very few examples, I think that at least the older Japanese YM-versions had regular strap buttons. But checking under the pickguard should tell if the electronics fit a US model - and maybe the body wood is recognisable; should be alder for US.

Anyways, IMHO the MIA/MIJ combo sounds a bit improbable if the serial matches the guitar. And I don't mean just the neck, but all specs for the original build - Fender usually includes those when they answer inquiries.

On the F-plate, I haven't seen it on a US-made YJM, but if Fender themselves admit the possibility, I don't see how the forum could deny it...

But there is the other side. If the neck plate raises suspicions now, will it do the same when the guitar is sold again. And cob201, can you live without being absolutely sure?

Couldn't one buy a japan body and then add the usa neck. When you then look up the serial it would say usa malmsteen but that would only be an indicator. I have seen plenty of bodies and necks separated and for sale.
There are 5 usa malmsteen bodies I see for sale at the moment but no necks so where are they?
As mentioned alder for usa basswood for japan.
Where is the G and G case I don't see it in the pics many of the japan ones came with a gig bag.
If the vendor does not have the correct case that would be the end of it for me without more proof.
Just sayin! :D

Great wisdom as always. Walk away.

It could just be the owner thought the plain neck plate looked...plain. It is an easy thing to change and I am surprised the seller hasn't changed it back. It would avoid all this suspicion.
