well, i think (as most people do) that gibsons have a different mentality than fenders. Fenders are the true workhorses of guitars. you can thrash em, beat em, toss em around, and they'll still scream. Gibson Les Pauls are REALLY nice to look at, but they're too nice to actually be played well. They're heavy, some necks are really thick, the gibsons have box like edges, and they are easily damaged. BUt if you can get past that, they sound great. Strats are totally different guitars, but people compare the two because they've risen to the top as rock'n'roll symbols. Les Pauls are for heavier rock, but you can make strats sound as good. Strats can be made to sound sort of like humbuckers, but not the other way around.

I really don't like bashing on gibson, but it's not for me. However i think that the sg is a nice alternative to the lp if youre a strat player. Thinner body, though some are a little neck heavy. Probably the easiest guitars to play on the upper frets because there's no heel. The sound that's close to the Les Paul but with more playability. I think SG's are the workhorses of the gibsons!

If it ain't a Strat, a Tele, or a Les Paul, forget it.

These three pretty much cover everything.

LP's & Strats can compliment each other beautifully in the same band, better than any other two I can imagine (imo).

I've had both a Les Paul and Strats and found a real deep love for Strats between the two. I actually traded my Les Paul for a Strat to get a rosewood fretboard Strat and have not regretted the move once! I think the main thing that bothered me about the Les Paul was the difference in the scale length and the tone. I would love to get a Classic SG (the one with the P90s) because that nasty bright sound that gets justifies it being a choice of a Gibson rather than a Strat in that instance. Strats to me give you much more variety in tones and sounds you can get out of them without any extra FX. I want to say I honor and respect the Les Paul and it's players, I just happen to love my Strats....

The scale length is something that takes some time to get use to. I personally prefer a longer neck. Also I find a Stratocaster to be a little more sensitive making for better dynamics. Another thing is tone. When I had my LP and listened to other LP players their tones are very similar. Alot of players pair a LP and a Marshall resulting in very similar tones. Strat players usually have very distinct tones. Hank Marvin and Ritchie Blackmore both play a strat and sound nothing alike.

Hey Funky,
My story is kinda the same. I got a real sweet deal on an Ibanez Artist, which is basically a Les paul. Great guitar, professionally set up and upgraded it with Duncan '59/jazz pups. The tone was quite good. Nice and deep and great for solos.
I recently got a MIM strat and realized that all the stuff I struggled to play on that Artist like stroking funk chords and playing clean intricate rhytmns with clarity, were just a breeze on the strat. The irony is that this is what I play most of the time in jam situations. I was actually quite pissed off at first for wasting so many years playing the 'wrong' guitar. For me the strat seems to be more of an extension of my soul than a instrument for musical expression.

Yeah, I still have that Artist and I ocassionally find uses for it when I need contrast with other strat players or for a different tone when recording, but it stays on the wall hook most of time these days.

Good luck finding another 62 Reissue.

I'm deffinetly a stratman. But I do have a gibson flying v what I love but its more of a secondary guitar. I play one song on it and then I'v had enough and go to my strat.

Like many of you, I started out on strats and ventured out with other guitars, including a EVH Wolfgang Special and a Gibson Les Paul. I traded the Les Paul for a Clapton Strat. It is unbelievable. I also find it true that strats take a little more effort to play, but that's what makes them so dynamic. You can bring out so much more with a strat than any other guitar. They are tough and have great tuning stability. This is the only guitar I know of that you can do a 5-fret equivalent string bend on the G-string and not go out of tune, (think Buddy Guy). Awesome.

I have owned more guitars then I can remember. Many have been high end models and they had their place at that time in my life. I disagree with the working harder with a strat. I feel my sound comes out more naturally with a strat then with a Les Paul or any other guitar I owned. The only guitar I thought was perfect out of the box was a Peavey Wolfgang. I actually owned one of the first 100 made with the curly maple tobacco sunburst finish. I owned it for two years and then traded it for a Fender Custom Shop Relic. About thirty guitars later I am here today with my American Deluxe, my 62 Vintage Reissue and my John Mayer Signature model.

Lets not forget the economics of Fender. Since Strats have interchangeable parts they are easily customized and manufactured. For the price of a Les Paul Standard I could buy two American Strats. I think Fender remains at the forefront of electric guitars because for working musicians such as myself and others, it is important to get what you pay for. While paying $1450 for a reissue Strat might sound expensive, in reality you get your moneys worth. On the other hand try buying a Gibson reissue for $1450. Bottom line is Fender is more bang for your buck. Gibson not so much. Play on fellow Stratmen

To me, there are 2 aspects of a strat's playability that differ from most other guitars:
1. A smaller neck width and thickness and depending on the frets tend to make a strat easier to fret and helps with bar-chords.

2. The longer scale length and string-thru-body setup makes the strings more difficult to bend.

The 2nd factor I just mentioned is where the strat magic is at. You might have to push a little harder and even fight with it a little, but it will bring out more dynamics and help give your sound it's own voice.

That's true! That second factor, specially the part "even fight with it a little" gives a great playability, it makes you feel the note, it seems like if you were part of the sound
:D

Anything you can do on any other guitar can be done on a strat, but you can do things with a strat that cannot be done with any other guitar.[/list]

I agree with you pedropais. A strat does make you feel more like a part of the sound than other guitars. But I must admit, my Epiphone Elitist Sheraton does a good job with this as well. It is a great guitar, but I still favor my strat for my #1 guitar.

That's why there's nothing like a strat
