The VG is nice, but its something you'd want to play with while you were in the store. Really, IMO, things like that, are just a bit too high maintenance. Besides, don't just get a guitar because its special sounding, get what you think sounds good, thats what really matters. :wink:

I thought you did tune the VG strat by hand. :?
Maybe I need to go read up on the specs...

Since I own a VG Strat, I can help illuminate the discussion.

First, think of it as an American Series Strat circa 2007 - so it has American Series pickups, a really nice neck, great paint job, good workman ship, but is a little strange. It has 5-way switching, and has a Volume and Tone knob. That's right only 1 Tone Knob that works in all 5 positions.

The guitar is tuned like all other Strats - nothing special about it. However, if you don't get it right, the guitar synth can make some weird notes for you.

Now for the extra parts - it has an extra pickup, a Roland one, that is hooked to an in-guitar synth. There are 2 controls for the synth. And one battery compartment - it really wants re-chargeable 2500 mAh batteries - I got a Kodak charger and batteries - it will go thru normal batteries like water - it does come with Duracells.

Now what about these extra controls - one is the Mode switch - it is labeled - N, S, T, H, A which are:

N - Normal (No Synth);
S - Modeled Stratocaster;
T - Modeled Telecaster;
H - Modeled Dual Humbucker Strat;
A - Modeled Acoustic (5 different models controlled by 5-way switch)

The other is the Tuning Control - it is labeled - N, D, G, d, B, 12 which are:

N - Normal (E A D G B E);
D - Drop D (D A G G B E);
G - Open G (D G D G B D);
d - Modal D (D A G D A D);
B - Baritone (B E A D F# B);
12 - 12 String (either Acoustic or Electric)

The Tuning effects each of the Modeled instruments, but NOT the Normal Strat.

So, if you want you can play a 12-string, dual humbucker Strat. :shock:

Go to the Fender VG page - http://fender.com/vgstrat - watch the videos, especially the 4-part in-depth demo by Greg Koch

Or go to the product page - http://www.fender.com/products//search.php?partno=0117500700 and download the specs and the owner's manual - the manual will explain how it works.

And check another demo by Greg Koch - it is very funny, but very informative - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7oOaxufUo2g

And this 3-part Fender VG Strat clinic by Greg Koch - which is quite good too - it starts here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pa7LH3vBm50

Wouldn't N be the stratocaster? kind of foolish to stick a strat modeling technology ON a stratocaster... the irony!

a 12-string Dual humbucker with vibrato and extreme bending abilities :D

When you have the Mode switch in N (Normal), the synth is not used at all and it's controls are ignored - in fact, you can take out the batteries, and all that will work is the Normal Strat - no special pickups - just the 3 American Series Strat pickups. When you are in one of the Modeled guitar modes, the 3 Strat pickups are ignored and only the Roland one is used. That is why there is a Modeled Strat.

To me the VG Strat is for Strat players who know they want a VG. It is a very specialized instrument with moon-walking capability. I do know that the VG is especially attractive for guitarists who perform alot live, utilizing the VG in lieu of acoustics and other guitars. It is a really nice instrument. But if you have to ask, it probably is not for you.

Just my $0.02...

I as well own a VG strat. I traded my American Strat for it and have no regrets at all. I can't see any reason for not getting one if you have the cash.
