I said I would never sell a guitar again but I did move on my JM strat. It checked all the boxes 21 frets rear truss slab board great pickups. It was that I’d grab my 06 std and it was just better playing. Found my playing was better on the 06 and I switched back and forth with les Paul’s easier. Funny but if I had my on signature strat I’d say I like the modern profile modern wiring and med jumbo fret size. The JM was rough sliding your hands along tall narrow frets. Did sound great though and sold in days! Saw JM on TV and missed it a little ...

Apparently Little Johnny Mayer has moved on from his guitar (the Stratocaster) as well.

I think he's playing a PRS now.

I'm not saying you will regret the sale .... well I am really.

As The Gurning Bluesmiester is no longer affiliated with Fender, and does indeed have a PRS fake Strat Signature model, his original (proper Strat) Signature models are only likely to go one way pricewise and it ain't down.

The JMs are a hot commodity ... can we ask how much you got for it?

Those fake Strats are fine instruments.

John had quit Fender because of Mike Eldred's departure from the firm.

He has also another signature PRS he uses for the Grateful Dead repertoire: the Super Eagle II.

I knew the JMs were kinda hot at the moment in a very cool market. I took 1250 knowing the shop obviously took several hundred. They did the work I picked up the check. It was a beautiful guitar. I got it used and I think that’s all I paid for it.

Two shops only offered 500 for my 02 Tele. American made maple candy apple. Plays nicer than most newer ones. No gloss on the boards and jumbo frets. Heavy though. Sounds great and I know better to mod it. Fender knows. It has that Tele sound even with modern saddles. They might even be powdered metal ones? I kept it but there was the interest in the Mayer so got the cash I needed. Saw an interview with Ed King and he said the strat he used on Sweet Home was tough to play. Then he found a good strat that he bonded with. I’m the same story I guess. Love my 06 std.

Did you think they were gonna give you full retail for it?

When you trade gear in at a music shop you're going to get hosed.
They need to make money on every deal and they're not going to make an exception for your trade in.
When they sell that gear they want to make profit.
They're in business to make money.
What they do is they consider what they can sell your gear for quickly.
The key word is quickly.
They don't want you gear lingering there.
They want it to move.
So they will assume a low resale price to get it out the door.
Then they will give you 65% to 70% of that price.
That is the amount they apply as trade-in value on the gear you're buying.
If you're not in a panic to make a deal you will almost always be better off selling it yourself.
If you like, you can even use the store as a resource.
Whatever they said they would sell it for, that's what you sell it for.
Then you get that whole amount rather than the 70% of it.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

+1

Panic invariably leads to loss of profit.

Yep.
Music stores and car dealers are not in the business of buying used cars and guitars for what they are worth.
They are in business to sell new and used items at a profit. They are not going to pay you any more than they would pay at auction, and that price is not going to be more than 75% of what they can flip it for, less any repairs needed.
$500 is a very good offer from a shop for an MiM Tele that will likely sell for $600.

We have a mixed blessing with inexpensive MiM and Asian models. They are inexpensive to buy, but that pulls the rug out of the market for used models. Why would I pay a shop $600 for a used MiM that may or may not have modifications or issues, missing tools, and no warranty, when for $100-$200 more I can buy a brand new model?
Would anyone pay more than $100 for a used Squier Bullet or Affinity?
Same as when Hyundai hammered the used car market with their new cars in the 90s that were as cheap as most used cars. My wife got a new Echo in 2000 because a used Corolla was about the same price.

There's more wiggle room with US models where a new one will run $1500-$2000, or a Les Paul that will sell for $2000-$2500 new.... but only wiggle room in that you'll get more than $500 for it. The percentages are still the same.
Guitars are not investments until they have documented proof of an autograph.

Panic leads to loss of profit.
Loss of profit leads to sorrow.
Sorrow leads to anger.
Anger leads to the Dark Side. :D
