Hi there,

Yesterday I noticed a small hole on the back of my American Pro strat. It looks like a tiny drill hole. I haven’t taken a drill to my guitar, so wondering what this could be? :-) image links below.

Could it be some kind of bug that’s bitten into it? I live in the UK so not many angry insects around here!

Thank you for any insights you may have!

Ah......the ubiquitous "strato-worm".

Happens all the time.

Beware when playing the instrument that it doesn't crawl out and bore into your navel......they have voracious appetites and can consume one's large intestine during a single gig.

I do not see any chipping on the body surface finish around the edges of that hole.
I has been my experience that it takes either a drill press with the wood in a vise and a very careful operator or else an extremely steady hand with a hand drill, I mean steady like that of a robot to drill a hole in a finished body without leaving at least some kind of evidence at the edges of the hole.
Also, I think I see evidence of poly around the edges of the of the hole and extending into the hole.
If I am seeing that correctly it would be indicative of finish being applied over a body with a hole already present.
Your pics are decent but they're still not quite clear enough for a definitive analysis by a third party observer online.
I think you should get a flashlight and a magnifying glass and examine the hole in detail and see if you can find evidence of either one of the situations I have described; ie: chips or excess finish in the hole.

At least then you'd have an idea of whether the hole was there before finishing or drilled after finishing.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I agree. I think it is a wood boring beetle hole in the original timber which was covered when the body was grain filled.

For what ever reason the grain filler plug has lost adhesion (perhaps it has taken this long to shrink or the timber of the body has moved) and the little plug has fallen out leaving the hole.

I'd fill it with wax and get on with my life, but that's just me.

Had guitar for a year and just noticed hole yesterday? Looks like a son or nephew, or friend of, got ahold of guitar and drill.
