the guitar i suffered the problem on measures 2 1/8" 53mm across the 21st.

The 21st fret is only 2" wide! One-eighth of an inch narrower explains a lot. Wow.

Here's some good info on those earliest Strats: http://www.provide.net/~cfh/54strat.html

Quote:
The 1954 Fender Stratocaster is of course the beginning of the breed. Stratocasters made from March 1954 to September 1954 were really hand-made prototypes, and the Strat's features did not "settle" until October 1954. The March to September 1954 models are the most interesting because of the unique prototypical features Fender was experimenting with, and the guitar's hand-crafted look and feel.

Man, I am learning plenty of stuff on this thread! Excellent.

So happens I have just taken delivery of an aftermarket S-type neck (a MightyMite) and it is far too wide, by proper specs. It measures 56.47 mm, 2.223 inches across the heel. However, by amazing luck, it is intended for a problem body that came my way, with a very badly cut neck pocket - which is much too wide. I had been expecting to rebuild the pocket, but it is actually a snug fit.

On the other hand, the pocket is also crooked, so I'll still be rebuilding a little. And that's the least of the problems on that one! A quick "throw together a guitar" project that has turned into a major construction effort - I'll post a thread on it when I have something to show...

On Orville's '54: could there be a case for "temporarily" swapping in a bridge with narrower string spacing, to make it more playable? Carefully storing the existing bridge for re-assembly at some point - you said that was one of the original parts, didn't you?

Cheers - C

Hi Lions-head.....use ImageShack(click on link) to host the pictures and post it here.

If you have the pictures in your hardrive or PC than it makes it more easier...after uploading the pictures from your PC to ImageShack....copy the URL link at the bottom of page and post it here in this format:

Thanks, Fhop. I promised to come through, but it just took longer than I had hoped. I assure you that all things are genuine, and there are absolutely no "shenanigans" here, my friend.

It looks real enough to my untrained eye as well. It is quite the instrument you and your grandma have there congratulations.

Thank you, all. She has little to be happy about these days, but unloading this guitar will surely help. More than the money, my grandpa is now passed away, and it was his pride and joy. I think it makes her sad to not hear him playing it anymore... Of course, she needs the money too.
