Hahaha - oh dear, sorry, man! I think we must have been writing our posts simultaneously...

If it helps, I have a 1920s Selmer that used to belong to my grandmother. Only found out what it was thanks to Forum member EdMardell (who we haven't seen around, lately). You can offer on that, if you want to - but I wouldn't go very high if I were you. Age and quality don't necessarily go together.

(And I am joking about that offering bit. This Forum ain't a marketplace, as we all understand. And it's not for sale. And... actually - why did I even mention it?)

Cheers - C

If I were going to sell a vintage Strat, I would call a few reputable vintage dealers, not some world-famous auction house.

A couple have been mentioned here. Another is Dave's Guitar Shop (WI). Many more can be found in the ads of Vintage Guitar magazine.

Thanks again to everybody for the good, unselfish advice. Believe me when I say that it is very appreciated.

I couldn't find my digital camera this morning, but I promise to have pictures to post by the weekend. I know it sounds weak, but it's the truth. I have been dealing with this while at work, and she lives 30 miles away. I owe everybody at least a few pictures and proof that this is real. You will get it.

No worries! :D
It has become just as "important" to me that I validate my existence on this site. Everybody has been very helpful, and it's the least I can do.

Again, no later than the weekend. Hopefully, it's worth the wait.

BTW: I have followed up on some of the links provided, and it's progressing as we "speak". Of course, they will want pictures too...

Yeah, you're going to find that with everyone you deal with about this guitar. You understand one like this rarely comes around and most will not only want pics but will want to do a detailed inspection.

Again, Good Luck!

You got that right. I am actually looking forward to it... It will be nice to have the "hard part" out of the way. Once it is authenticated, I can do the easy part of selling it. :D

Really? Why's that?

Not a loaded question: I have absolutely no personal experience of this kind of thing as far as guitars are concerned, so I'm keen to hear views.

But I have heard, third hand, of one or two people selling to dealers, and later discovering their instruments being advertised at multiples of what they were paid, much to their frustration. Buyer beware - and seller beware, also.

The auction houses have been caught up to their own shenanigans over the years, but at any rate you know in advance what their percentage cut will be of the final sale. My source on that is out of town till the weekend so I can't confirm it immediately, but it is somewhere in the region of 20% plus taxes - give or take (and don't quote me on that figure).

I'd certainly ask the advice of a dealer - but I'd want to set it against what an auction house had to say, too. These are substantial sums of money we're talking about (by my standards, anyway).

Hungry for more information - from all sides!

Cheers - C

Hello, all.
I am new to this community and hoping to find a little guidance. My grandpa passed away over a year ago, and my grandma is now ready to sell his guitar. It's an original Stratocaster from 1954, which she purchased as new in 1954 for $250. She has asked me for help, but I do not know a whole lot about guitars. I know it's worth a lot of money, but how would I go about selling something so valuable? I have started researching the guitar on the internet and I have learned about how to "authenticate" the guitar. It's the real deal, but both eBay and Craig's List don't give me a lot of confidence that I will reach my "target market". Do I attempt to go through a more "high-end" channel like Christie's or Sotheby's? Please help. Any and all feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

I would recommend calling Gruhn's Guitars: http://gruhn.com/

They have as much experience with with vintage guitars as anyone in the business. George Gruhn is a vintage guitar god.
