It's been a while since I've owned a Strat way back in the 70s, but I was looking for a hole in the peg where to insert the string through or are my eyes just bad. Does the string just go through a slit or is it I can't see the hole on the tuner post? Thanks!

I think you're referring to the vintage slotted tuners. I love 'em and would like to see them as standard issue again.

On those I usually cut the string about 2 inches after the tuner, put the remaining end inside the hole in the center, bend the string and wind it around. I make sure to keep pressure down the string at the tuner while I wind so that the angle of the string is the sharpest.
