Although my guitar may not be typical because of it not being a regular production guitar, in these pictures you can clearly see the holes that have been filled. I don't believe they used dowels. With a close inspection with a magnifing glass it appears to be only wood filler in the holes. That is not to say there couldn't be be a dowel and then some filler on top of it.

Thanks for sharing those pictures! Elsewhere, I have said that they had these "dowels" since "day one." I guess this proves it. And even if they weren't always (or ever) dowels, they were the pin holes for the routing templates.

When I first saw those "spots" on my guitars, I thought they looked like wood filler. Being Fender, I wouldn't be surprised if both dowels and/or wood filler were used over the years the bodies had these holes. In any case, people refer to those spots as "the dowels."

Fender Custom Shop put those filled holes on their vintage reissues:

What a interesting thread. Thanks for bringing it back to life. The good ole days of the forum! I wonder where cryingstrat and some of the older members are today? Informative and enjoyable!!

There is a wealth of informative threads from the past years that some of the newer members would enjoy reading. Searching them out is another thing altogether though!! :?

There have been posts about the mysterious holes under the pickguards of American Standard and MIM Standard Strats ... the CNC positioning holes.

Well it turns out that vintage guitars have had such holes too, from Day One. The difference being the holes were much smaller (for pins to hold routing jigs) and they plugged them with dowels!

Here's a picture of a 1963 strat body sanded clean:

Image

The two dowels are clearly visible as dark brown approximately 1/4 inch circles: one to the right of where the neck plate attaches, the other along the bottom edge, to the left of center. Some say that these holes go all the way through the body, but I don't think so as they don't seem to line up, front to back, on my guitars. The upper one can't be seen from the front as it's under the pickguard.

Even if the vintage guitar (1954 through the '70s) is painted, you can usually find the dowels because the paint and clear coat sink into the edges a bit. You just gotta hold it to the light right.

Sometime in the early '70s the positions of the dowels changed a bit and both can be found on front and back. Look for these the next time you are shopping for that vintage axe.

These dowels can be found on other Fender guitars too, of course.

Those wholes were for painting perposes.

Here's a nice picture of a dowel on the back of 1962 Strat being restored. Forum member iddent has a current thread about restoring a 1964 Strat (that's probably more like a 1969 judging by the neck) and you can see a dowel on one of his pictures (after removing much of the finish).

Good information. Thanks everyone. I think Mike said someplace that they hold them in the jig by vacumn these days.

Before you write that big check for that vintage Fender, be sure you can find the dowels!
