So i know that the normal way (it seems) to clean a rosewood fretboard is with lemon oil, and that many uses the Dunlop '65 lemon oil...

but since they dont have that in stock at my local music store i was wondering: could you use oil from a real lemon or could this ruin the fretboard, and are there any other chemichals i can use instead?

Thanks..

What does your music store carry for fretboards?

I always recommend Gerlitz Guitar Honey, which can be ordered online from Gerlitz.

Make sure you aren't confusing "lemon oil" with "lemon juice"!

I use Dr. Stringfellow Lem-oil Fret Board Conditioner and it is not the stuff that you get from a lemon. It has petroleum distillates in it as well even says flamable keep from open flame!

I followed Chet's suggestion in the past and bought some Gerlitz Guitar Honey at Guitar Center. I'm very happy with it.

This may come as a surprise to most of you, but Martin Guitar says in their FAQ:

Quote:
Can I use lemon oil on my fingerboard?

We do not recommend using lemon oil on our fingerboards. The acids in lemon oil break down the finish of our guitars. It may also aid the corrosion of the frets and lessen the life of the strings.

But the good news is that there is Lemon Oil and there is Lemon Oil, and the two aren't the same thing. Most products called Lemon Oil is just lemon scented mineral oil .... which is safe to use on your guitars' fretboards. Lemon Oil with real oils (and acids) from lemons isn't.

Personally, I use something called Bore Oil that local music stores sell in their "orchestra" sections. It's used to clean and treat the insides of woodwind instruments. I believe that it is just ... mineral oil, but it's a lot cheaper than some magic Snake Oil that some places sell.
