Hi Folks! I'm planning to purchase a Fender American Elite Stratocaster HSS in Satin Ice Blue Metallic finish. Question is, does the paint easily wears off over constant usage compared with a regular Gloss Polyurethane?

I also read here from the internet that that areas where you rub it with your arm or picking hand will develop a shine from the constant rubbing. Is that true that it will shine over time?

I'm kinda with OCD so I I would like my guitar to always look pristine and new. Kindly advise if I should just go with a regular Gloss Polyurethane?

Thank you!

I don't quite get your question, the 'metallic' finishes are a) gloss and b) polyurethane just like the non-metallic ones, so the wear marks aren't any different.

If a guitar is played, it will not 'always' stay 'pristine and new'.
But the polyurethane finishes are probably the most resistive against those pick hand rubbings and such.
Regular cleaning and polishing (with products that give a protective layer, e.g. Fender's own stuff with carnauba) might help, but eventually age shows.

The body of my 20+ year old Strat looks pretty much the same as the day it left the factory. The neck is a different case and, quite frankly, looks a bit odd screwed to a pristine body.

It is this, among other things, which has made me conclude I don't actually like Poly and am much happier with my other guitars which are growing old with me.

The other thing is a guitar is a tool. While my 20+ MiA hasn't had the body marked, as far as I am aware, worrying about the finish really doesn't help ones enjoyment of playing.

My other guitars have marks and knocks which all tell stories and remind me of the good times we have had together.

My suggestion is to buy a nitro or thin coat guitar and embrace the damage as part of your life with your guitar.

If you are asking "Should I get satin or gloss?" satin generally becomes glossy as the surface becomes polished. Satin will also show surface scratches and marks more readily.

Yeah... that's my concern if the Satin part will get glossy once you rub it...

That sucks then. I guess I should just go with a Gloss finish then... =(
