Obviously here in England I have no experience of GC, so I accept what you say if you reckon there's a dearth of used Strats where you live. I suppose I'm just thinking that you are at least in Fender-land, whereas I'm definitely not, and still I could guarantee to be able to view a dozen used Strats within 50 miles. Out of that dozen, if I wasn't worried about colour, I'm quite sure there'd be a sub-7lb example.

If you're talking to sellers who tell you the guitar is of a certain weight, and you then find out they lied - well yes, I can see that'd be frustrating. Personally I haven't found that many flakes in our game, and I've been playing for 60 years.

But surely you've made your mind up that you can get a light Strat by modding? Can't agree, sorry: The only way to get a light Strat is to start with a light Strat! But good luck in your quest, anyway.

Cheers - Peter.

I don't know of a practical and efficient way to shop online for a used guitar
Well no, online isn't ideal, obviously - from any angle!

I'm surprised that in the US you don't have reasonably-local Fender dealers (or other guitar shops). Even in England, I could name you 3 or 4 within 50 miles that would probably stock some 20-30 Strats in total at any one time.

It depends on where you live.
Los Angeles may have a few hundred dealers (but even Guitar Center is unlikely to have 20 US-made Strats).
Keep in mind that England is 1/3rd the size of California, with 30% more population.
The US is a huge place, not unlike Russia, and with huge areas that are sparsely populated where you won't find even a Walmart for 100 miles, much less a music store.
If you are not in or near one of the metropolitan areas, it can be a major trek for anything from a new vehicle to a nice jacket.

Really, Rich...?!!! I wasn't aware of that!!!

Seriously, I have been there - it's just that I haven't looked for guitar shops and (wrongly) assumed that you'd have more of them in the country that actually makes them. I do know the distances involved, having experience of what was described as a 'day trip' (by road) from New York to Niagara...

And OP posts from Connecticut, so I was assuming (wrongly again, perhaps) that he's not THAT rural...?

Whatever, he seems to have decided on his course of action...

Cheers - Peter.

Honestly, I was surprised at how small (and crowded) the UK actually is.
I did a double-take and checked multiple sources when I got the square mile numbers. I honestly thought that England was maybe as large as Texas, having never had a reason to overlay the two.
California has about 40 million to your 55 million, but so much smaller! California is too crowded for me.

As has been mentioned, there really isn't a "drop-in" solution to your problem. I'm not sure I'd replace a metal trem block with wood, simply because I'd be concerned about losing tone and sustain to the wood.

One other suggestion I saw was to replace the body with a chambered mahogany body from someone like Warmoth. They'll drill it for a hardtail and you can lose both some of the wood weight and the trem block without sacrificing anything but some funds for the body.

Just my opinion.
