Hi All,

New to the forum and looking for some advice.

I'm really interested in making a Mark Knopfler Signature spec strat via the Custom Shop as these cannot be purchased anymore and wondered if it was worth sending in the spec via multiple dealers to get the best price. Is this possible or will it be the same price from anyone? Do dealers discount CS models made for customers at all?

Many thank

Matt

Hi, welcome to the Forum!

There's a section here specifically about Custom Shops where you might get more answers.

I've known Custom Shop owners who bought brand new Masterbuilts and NAMM specials, but none of them went through the process of actually ordering the guitars and waiting for them to be built.

Lots of CS dealers order guitars themselves and have them in their stores ready to sell to you. Often for less than the cost of ordering it yourself and waiting. And sometimes you can haggle a discount.

If you want the exact specs of the MK you might have to order it. But if there are specific features you want but ok if some other features vary a little, you might find one in stock somewhere.

Like if you just want a vintage style red Strat with a narrow neck, but don't care if it has a flatter radius and giant frets, that might be already waiting for you at a store. Or maybe you could settle for a slightly different shade of red? Or a light relic?

Good luck on your quest!

I ordered an Artist Series CS strat a couple months ago. It’s being built. I’m looking at 9 months or so. I checked with three dealers, all listed on the CS site. They all quoted me the same CS price of $5500 but varied on the discounts. One said they couldn’t do less than $5500 unless I wait for the next promotional such and such. It was a big chain so I knew he was being honest. Two said ‘it’s gonna be $5500 but we can give it to you for...’. One said they could do $5400 the other said $4900. Actually the $4900 was the first place I checked.... so I called them again and asked if they could do better than that (had to ask) and he said the CS prohibits selling Artists below a certain price and $4900 was the lowest. Makes sense considering the contract they have with the artist. So if you shop around you may get a better price based on the volume that particular place does and their overhead etc., but I think logically the CS is gonna give every dealer the same price—it’s the dealers ‘deals’ that may vary.
I actually inquired about getting an Artist as a base and customizing as a MB not knowing they legally can’t modify Artists because of the contract they have with the artist. So, this was my first time but anecdotally I’d say the CS price for your particular MB (for a given Masterbuilder) but different dealers may offer you different discounts.

You may have difficulty getting one made to those specs.
I would keep my eye on the second hand market.
If you do manage to order one be prepared to pay and wait.
As mentioned some dealers will give you a better price.
Let us know how you get on. :D

Thanks all, I've got a couple of retailers getting me a quotation so we'll see what discount can be applied by each. The actual spec isn't too disimilar to a base 62 model in the CS brochure, just a 7.25 rosewood neck and texas pickups..

Ah they'll make that. I thought you were trying to get one made to the exact signature spec.
Check the cs build sheets if you haven't already. :D

Thanks all - nearly 6 weeks and still no quote from either shop. Can't understand how it takes this long to obtain a price!

Might have to look elsewhere...Suhr? Fingers crossed it turns up soon!

Just think about how long it'll be before you actually receive the guitar.

Ditto.
Ordering a CS build is certainly not an impulse purchase unless you find a "stock" model in a store.
It's a long-term commitment.

If it is a "stock" CS production model, you're probably looking at months.
A personally-spec'd build? Year(s).

That might be the stumbling block if Mark Knopfler Signature Model was mentioned in the enquiry.

No doubt someone will wonder if they can now do this due to licensing agreements and wont know the answer and will then need to ask someone else who also wont know and it becomes difficult.

If that is the case I might be inclined to resubmit the enquiry with the exact specification as you noted above, and no mention of MK, and see if that gets processed quicker.
