Well, even though Ive got a brand new hwy1 strat Im looking for something to play some metal on. Its down to 2 local guitars that I equally like and are the same price. the first is an Epi les paul quilt top stock and the other is a Warmoth SG with Duncan hums and a floyd rose. Which would you chose?

Put some humbuckers in your Hwy 1.

yeah, put some duncans in the highway one. That way, you could easily switch sounds without paying so much money and switching guitars. Better to have one guitar that does everything you want it to.

KEEP THE HIGHWAY ONE!!!

To add on to my previous post, get two humbuckers that you like the sound of, I personally like the SD Pearly Gates, and find you a nice Tex-Mex strat pickup to go in the middle, (unless the Hwy 1 already comes with those, idr) and find you a good tech that can wire in some coil taps to the humbuckers. That way, you have a full humbucker tone, and some single coil tones out of the Hwy 1. And you're probably only looking at around $300, which is less than you'd spend on anything other than a Mexi-Standard.

Neither, my friend. The best you can do - in my opinion - is staying in the Fender- family. Try one of the many telecasters with EMG or Enforcer humbuckers. Tele's can produce great metal-sounds...and they look great to (Jim Root- tele, John5-tele, .....)

Try lowering/raising the pickups before you replace the current pups in your Strat! It can make a difference! Also...NEVER buy anything with a Floyd Rose bridge! They say every rose has its thorns, but crap, Floyd Roses are all thorns!!

Keep the Highway 1. Trust me...I traded away my Strat once...crap I regretted it horribly. But I got it back in the same trade for the same guitar. :D

murdock, I have the Epi LP Classic Quilt Top and it's a very nice guitar. Play as many as possible as they're not all created equal. However, I'm not sure an LP would be your best bet for metal. It definitely can have a crunchier sound than a Strat but you probably ought to look at some Ibanez, Schechter or Jackson guitars as those are often times more associated with metal.
