I am over 50 and I bought my first strat. I love it, but I was wondering if anyone could tell me anything about the made in Japan 80s models. The guy I bought it from said that is a 57 reissue. I dont know how to tell but it plays well. Thanks for any info you might have.

Welcome to the forum.

Having the serial number would help.

One of my strats is a 1985 Made in Japan and I am told that is made with a 57 RI neck.I believe this to be so as this tech has seen many a guitar. Yours says made not crafted right? If so thats the story as I know it. Chet is an MiJ guru and he will know if you give him your serial#.

Your strat was made in the 1987-1988 model year. About the necks, I don't know about yours but I suspect it is the same as mine, it is a 57 replica ,and I was told mine was a 57 neck. Now this does not mean it is a original 57 neck or a NOS 57 neck . I believe it is just a neck modeled after one, same profile, denensions etc. but it sure plays and feels great.
Hope this helps you out.

Ive got a 89 mij 62 reissue. With a Kahler trem locking nut and an emg sa pickup set. This is a wicked guitar probably my fav even over my 08 hwy1. I love the neck even with the small vintage frets.

Most Japan made strats in the 80's have the "Made In Japan" printed at the heel(correct me if i'm wrong) of the neck instead of "Crafted In Japan" like the most recent models have....

I don't want to start a MIM vs MIJ thing, but my MIJ plays and feels as good as any medium priced line guitar (and better than alot) that Fender makes. Only thing my daughter has laid claim to it. :)

Mine is on the headstock along with the serial # just like modern day strats only the serial # is in a silver color instead of black. Made in Japan is in black.

I have always been one who believes that mid 80's MIJ's are better than the MIA's of that era.

I have a 1986 MIJ '72 RI Strat with the 3 bolt neck.
