hi guys
I hope this is the right place to post this .
I wanted to know your thoughts on this guitar, buying thru a reverb shop. It's meant to be an original Custom Shop which did n't haver the COA , but apparently as the shop is a fender dealer they just got one sent to them after doing the proper paperwork etc, he even sent me a copy of the email back and forth with Fender .
your feedback is appreciated .

regards

Ax

It's fishy.
They appear to be noiseless pickups, but the complete lack of shielding on the bottom of the pickguard bothers me.
The neck plate also seems fishy, I've not seen "Custom Edition"
Finally, the message from the Fender rep to the shop is not worded how a person from Corona CA would speak, unless "Jake" is a UK rep.

I would call Fender myself with the serial number and ask for a description of the matching guitar.

Never a bad idea to check with Fender.

I'm guessing legit, though.
In general, that looks very customshoppish.
The serial is found in Fender's database, resulting in "CUSTOM INSTRUMENT" - but without any more info.
Other around-2000 Custom Shop guitars have a similar huge "JC" (for John Cruz; he got the Master status in 2003) stamp.
And the serial matches the current COA, Jake Law works for Fender UK; etc.

The pickups and the pickguard bother me, too. Non-original, maybe - there could have been a tortoise pg with Texas Specials as factory stock.

So Ax, let us know how it turns up.

It looks all over the place to me.

62 Pickguard, although it has had a more modern one.

Old looking relic finish with a two post bridge and a modern neck but with vintage tuners?

A really odd specification. That's not to say its wrong but it certainly wouldn't be to my taste.

I suspect those pictures are not all of the same guitar.
The neck heel says Clapton but a Clapton model would have had a signature on the headstock.
It would also have bent steel saddles and Lace Sensor pups.
There is a lot that is right with most of the pics if you don't know it's supposed to be a Clapton but when taken together and considering it is supposed to be a Clapton it's a mess.

Some aspects of it baffle me.
The stamps in the cavities, the bolting plate, the steel plate on the heel when there's no micro-tilt.

I also don't understand why it would have a vintage "on top of the lacquer" decal with truss rod adjustment at the nut.

Yet the walnut plug looks glossy, which is also odd.

On the neck heel, note that there appears to be scarring from where a micro-tilt would have been.
That neck likely did not ship with that body. It may or may not be from a Clapton Strat.

Those are Vintage Noiseless pickups... and I'd like to know where they got the pure white covers because I need a set. I've bought 50mm and 52mm covers and they fit the pole spacing (bridge is 52mm, neck and middle are 50mm), but all of the covers I've seen are too tall... they are cut for the standard coil height, and will work with the Hot Noiseless which are a touch taller than standard, but the Vintage Noiseless puts the bucking coil under the baseplate, so the primary coil is about 3/16" shorter.

Too many suspicious inconsistencies for me to be comfortable paying a premium price for.

That is interesting indeed.
It has not entirely eased my concerns though.
Only some of them.
I need to see the pickup cavities and neck pocket/heel.
European market or not there are still some aspects of it that do not make sense and I don't like it when guitars don't make sense, particularly Custom Shop (team built) guitars.
If it is a Master Built one-off then there are no boundaries but a team built is usually typical.
Also (and this is more of a general question about the Fender universe) why would any guitar need to be made "specially for the European market"?
Amps I can understand but guitars?
What special differences are required for a guitar to properly function in Europe?
I don't think that is an unreasonable question.
I notice the guitar in this thread does not possess the "original" David Gilmour switch.

I guess what I am saying is .... I still have questions.

Fender has been offering different-from-US-selection guitars for Europe, Asia, Australia and whatever at least since the eighties, so that doesn't tell much.

I'm absolutely not a CS instruments expert.
And I'm not sure about the guitar in this topic, one way or another.
But I'm leaning towards legit - I think there are just too many typical CS markers on the instrument. Not to mention the background story - even streching to that Jake/UK message.
And the specs (one may consider them weird or not…) for "Custom Shop American Classic" (there's that big AMCLNOS in the body), later named "Custom Shop Custom Classic" have variations; I don't know if it's because of the year models or for special requests from the customers.

So, it would be very interesting to know the result from Fender Consumer Relations...

Even if (which appears to be the case) the Vintage Noiseless pups are original, the lack of any shielding or Fender logo would indicate that the scratchplate has been replaced.
Being noiseless, it would maybe not require shielding in the body cavities, but I would at least expect a 50's style plate in the control area, and some kind of stickers with Fender branding and part number/bar code.

And that embossing in the neck pickup cavity.
What the hell is that?
