Hey guys,

I’ve got a Japanese strat, and I want to know which one it is. I’ve been searching a lot through the internet and found absolutely nothing. It is 30 years old, or thereabouts, has fine tuning in the bridge and a nut locker, very unusual for a strat. It’s serial number is E644929. Could somebody help me?

Thanks

Hi & welcome to the forum.

The serials for guitars that old aren't in any databases.
So, the only way to get help from the forum is posting pics.
The locking nut and the unusual trem point to some model of the Contemporary Strats, but that's just vague guessing - and nothing you told guarantees the guitar is all original.

Usually at this point, the next question is "how do I post pics", so:
Quote:
First you need to upload your pics to the internet. Use a pic hosting site (imgur, imgbb or such - avoid photobucket) or some common web framework like e.g. facebook, googlephotos - whatever you're familiar with.
The important thing is that the web site provides you with a pic address - that's the one starting with 'http' or 'https' and ending in '.jpg' .

Copy the pic address, and use the IMG-command (visible when you write a message) on the forum.

Preview your post so everything is OK.

Thanks dude! Actually, I’m pretty sure its all original, cause it was from my father, and he bought it new. There was also a square shaped hard case, but it was stolen. Here are some pics of it:

If your father bought it new some thirty years ago, the fakers were still toddlers...

Anyways, looks OK (legit, most likely original) to me.
I'd say it's model number 27-4300; and my guess is, you'd find an ST-562 stamp in the neck end/pocket… This model is often called the "Contemporary Standard 22".
The color (Lake Placid Blue) isn't the most common with Contemporary Strats, so that raises the rarity & value.

A nice guitar, if I may say so. Hope the trem is fine; parts are hard to find and expensive.

Can you find additional info on those?

Hahahaha indeed. But once you play it, all doubts disappear, it has a very nice sound compared to other strats. I have the trem, I just thought it wouldn’t be necessary to post pics of it. Anyways, I’ve put a picture of it in the fold:

The way you put it in is pulling into the guitar.

The saddest thing about it is that I don’t have any other information to give. Actually I was trying to get more information here. How much would you value this guitar?

A bit of misunderstanding here; I meant can you find more info about your guitar model, on the web, with those model numbers I gave. These (= the whole Contemporary series) is pretty well covered - even though it seems there were variations in many models.
So try googling "stratocaster 27-4300" or "stratocaster ST562".

The basics: web.archive.org/web/20160418011042/http://freespace.virgin.net/john.blackman4/st22.htm
And you can find info on the whole Contemporary series with the links on that page.

On the value, it seems the prices are all over the place. Asking prices from around 700$£€ to over 1300$£€ - depending on the condition, and heavily on where a guitar is sold.

Thanks a lot for this help. I found lots of guitars that were similar to mine, but no one had the “F” logo at the back of the body. It makes me think whether mine is from a special serie, or something like it. That website gave me a lot of useful information, but nothing about some hypothetical special series.

You're welcome, glad if I was any help - but remember, the diagnosis is just one interweb opinion.

Since you mentioned the neck plate; might be wise to check if there's a Micro-Tilt mechanism under that plate, and that would make the plate non-original. While at it, you'd see the neck pocket/heel markings, too. And if you plan to sell the guitar at some point, the buyers most likely will ask about those, so take pics.

Ok!
This week I’m taking it to a luthier, and pics will be taken. I don’t have any plans to sell it, just wanted to know more about the story behind this amazing guitar, in case I need to put new gear in it, or just leave it how it is.

I've a Japanese Strat from this era too. The E in the serial number stands for Eighty as in 1980s. The first digit is the year in that decade, making yours a 1986. Mine is a '72 reissue and has the 3 bolt micro-tilt system which was correct for a reissue of a '72. The neck plate also has the fender "F" logo. Hope this helps. Lovely looking guitar btw
