So my son’s strat is a Squire Affinity in body only now. Had a buzz was tracking it down. When I disconnected to ground on the volume pot coming from the claw. Now no buzz. Can someone please help me understand why this is? I have been told over and over how important the ground is.

Well that is strange.
is it repeatable a few times i.e solder it back onto the claw does the buzz come back.
Was the claw desoldered at the claw without opening the guitar up. :D

All of the internals have been replaced. 920D pots and 5 way switch, single coil fender Yosemite pickups. Yes it was reproducible.

Interesting. What is the ohms resistance from the claw when the earth is connected to the earth on the output jack?
Does it happen at other places and with other amps? :)

So small electronics isn't my thing. But it seems like the guitar must be grounded elsewhere and when you "double-ground" it by connecting that wire, you are causing it to be ungrounded. Why? No idea. But doesn't it seem like if it's not buzzing, it MUST be grounded? Thus desolder the wire and call it a day? Again, guitar wiring isn't my thing, just using logic here.

All the Affinities I've seen are (like many other models…) "double grounded" from the factory. One wire from the trem claw, another from the conductive paint in the routings bottom. Maybe "triple grounded", since there is a foil on the backside of the pickguard. But regardless of how many ground wires there are, they all lead to one point; the output jack sleeve.
(Sidetracking: Some use "star ground" to avoid "ground loops" - I'm not electrically talented enough to know if that can even exist on a guitar, but actually we're talking about antenna effect here. And that's not what the OP describes, anyway. Star ground is tidier, of course.)

On this guitar, it's yet unclear to me if the mods (pot & switch) cured the problem, or if they were in the guitar while it was (is?) buzzing… (On Affinities, a typical problem spot is the output jack and it's wires…)
