That's an excellent question.
Is this a pickup you have in your possession or a pic from the internet?
Is that a stray winding wire reaching up to the top of a pole piece?

It is a question from a french forum, a french guy asking why these screws.

"Is that a stray winding wire reaching up to the top of a pole piece? "
- I don't know.

Hot bridge pickup from the Am.Std. Delta tone system.
Mass = two screws, other than that I'd be interested in knowing what they impart on the pup as well. I assume they are or become somewhat magnetized over time, maybe focusing the range of frequencies.
Perhaps just some Fender sales mumbojumbo to hype a then new product.

An old listing w/ good pics.

Oh my ....

That'll be the next big thing .... pickup screw threads.

What do you guys think about the bridge pickup sheet-metal-screw mod?
Is there a tone difference between galvanized and cadmium plated screws?
What happens if I use a screw that is long enough it comes out the top?
Will it cut my strings?

On a more serious note, it may be possible Fender added screws for the sake of tone.
Lindy Fralin sells a steel plate that goes under a Strat bridge pup, something similar to a Tele pup.
It is said to improve bass frequency response.

I think those screws are still used; in "the other Vaughan" Tex-Mex model. Adds ferric mass, but in a different (more focused…) way than a Telecaster bridge pickup's base plate.
Hmmm.

Yep that is it. The custom classic even has an addition plate to "enhance" the sound.
As mentioned that pickup looks shagged though with a broken wire. :D

Well since it is on the outside it might be repairable with the possibility of a few less winds. :D

The inductance/baseplate idea always comes up, and seems to be the only explanation that makes sense.

All the molded plastic bobbins have the holes in them. If I ever had a set of pickups like that, I'd try removing the screws and put them into one of the other pickups. If the bridge pickup gets a little thinner/brighter, and the other pickup gets a little darker/fatter, we'd have confirmation of the theory.

Common sight on British noughties AmStds' bridge pups. We got flat pole Alnico 5's during those years. Never noticed any difference tonally myself!

Stratele's friend being French, perhaps he's actually in France (as opposed to Canada), and they got the same pups on those Strats?

Cheers - Peter.

Those are called "Mojo Retaining Screws". They stop the mojo from leaking out.
